DIY Girls present at MIT EurekaFest

Donation protected
Since the summer of 2016, 12 girls from San Fernando High School have been working tirelessly to invent a portable, solar-powered shelter for homeless individuals of Los Angeles.

Our community, the San Fernando Valley saw a 36 percent increase in homelessness in 2016, to 7,100 residents. Local leaders, moreover, regard alleviating the plight of the homeless in Los Angeles as a “state of emergency.” It is with a corresponding sense of urgency that we have sought to to apply engineering principles and processes toward the development of a device that we believe will go a long way in serving the homeless population in Los Angeles.

We are one of 15 InvenTeams of students nationwide that have received $10,000 in grant funding to solve real-world problems through invention. The Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam Grant, a sponsored program in the School of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),  is a highly competitive grants initiative that offers high school students a rewarding hands-on experience that engages them in the invention process. Students work in teams to develop an invention that solves a real-world problem they have identified and apply basic engineering principles as they develop their solution. Their work culminates in a trip to MIT in June to showcase their invention project at EurekaFest™ (June 15-17, 2017).

We are asking for your help to get our girls to MIT in June! We are from a low income community and our families cannot afford to send their girls to Boston this summer.  We will not let this stop us from acheiving our dream of presenting at MIT!

We would like all of our team members to be able to participate in this once in a lifetime experience. However, none of the grant we received can go towards travel expenses. We are solely reliant upon fundraising to make it possible for all team members to take part in this experience. This is where we need your help! We are asking for support with logding and travel expenses.

If you can help, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Please share and help us make our dream come true!
