We are a multi community led effort to transform streets into public, performative and equitable spaces through the arts.
The Diverse Streets Initiative recognizes that the arts were disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. In solidarity with, and as an advocate for the arts, we believe that it is an integral medium that makes our communities thrive. It serves as a bridge between education and expression, as it also acts a vehicle for activism and change.
We recognize the importance of racial awakening, and it's prevalence in all aspects of our built environment. With the arts, we aim to promote and propel the voices of people of all ages, orientation and creed by utilizing public spaces, or open streets. We believe that streets offer the potential to act as a public space that helps connect communities together, especially during these trying times.
Our pop up shows serve as a pilot for community led, curated, supported and operated mini mobile museums/exhibitions. Our hope is to reclaim streets as community spaces for the arts, by making Open Streets in New York City permanent in some locations. The streets will be continually used by the community, and groups that promote equity such as ourselves.
Your donations will help make the artists, poets and musicians feel supported, comfortable and loved.
Donations provided in 2020 were rolled over to 2021 events. Donations made in 2021 will be evenly distributed amongst four events in 2021. Your names will go on our website, and on our future street shows!
