Hi, my name is Amanda McGlone and my family of four needs help with hotel expenses and down payment for a rental home on February 1st. We have been displaced since 11/18/2021 because the apartment we rented on the 500 block of Colfax Avenue in Scranton for 3.5 years has a damaged roof that has caused toxic mold due to improper roof installation, buckling of roof, broken gutters and upkeep neglect from absentee landlords. We left the home on 11/18/21 because we were told air qualities were unsafe for occupancy. No wonder we felt nauseous, dizzy, and had headaches all the time! We had to place our beloved Golden Retriever, Bentley at a local doggy daycare and kennel for all of this time, at the tune of $44 per day from 11/18/2021 until we took him out 2 days ago. We had to pay all expenses of a hotel/ meals out totaling $3000 from 11/18/21 through December 2nd because our landlords said this wasn’t their responsibility. Ultimately, our renter’s insurance denied our claim because the cause of loss was building structural issues, which falls under responsibility of the landlord. After we ran out of money and our landlords tried intimidation on the phone with my husband, we retained a lawyer to guide us. Warranty of Habitability state law mandates they are responsible for our housing until the issue is fixed. Beginning 12/3/21 after informing them of state law, they began paying for our hotel stay which was 2 rooms/ beds for ourselves and our children. Throughout the stay, they have continued to threaten on different dates to stop paying even though the issue has not been fixed. After agreeing to pay through January 3rd, they suddenly called the hotel on Christmas Eve morning and told the front desk person to kick us out on December 26th, but to wait to tell us until Christmas Day. Thankfully we had become friendly with the hotel staff and they told us right away. Since then, we are paying out of pocket again for meals out for the four of us and we’re back into a 1 room hotel with 2 beds and a pull out couch and we’re running out of money fast. We are hoping to have a place for February 1st, but even working full time we cannot afford 1 more month of a hotel at nearly $5000 plus meals out for at least $65 to $80 daily. Scranton isn’t an Airbnb destination and we can’t find any cheaper options. The bill alone for our Golden, Bentley is $1760 and the owners of “Little Red Dog House” in Clarks Summit have not charged us anything as of yet due to our situation. We want to pay them as not only did they provide a great service caring for our fur baby, but also let us visit Bentley anytime we wanted, knowing how much we missed him. The landlords are responsible for that bill and are refusing to pay for that too. This experience has been highly stressful for all of us, worrying and just concentrating on keeping a roof over our heads and providing meals for our kids day to day. We appreciate any help anyone can give to help us. Anyone who knows me knows I pride myself on being a fighter and self sufficient so asking for this help is truly humbling. The positive that has come out of this is that we and our children are well practiced in handling things as they come, one day at a time, and our family continues to grow stronger!❤️
