Disjecta 2019 Critical Impact Fundraiser
Portland is at a critical point for the funding of contemporary visual art. As our city grows at a staggering rate, we continue to see the shuttering of academic art institutions, contemporary art organizations, studio spaces, and galleries which serve and foster the creative spirit of our city and neighborhoods. The reasons for this decline are vast and many but the impact is certain. Without these art spaces, artists cannot thrive and show art that matters to our community. It is in light of this reality and in the spirit of the conversations among artists and our community that we ask for your donation to Disjecta Contemporary Art Center--to ensure your community will continue to provide a space that fosters the critical conversations between artists and audiences.
Why now?
We will host an ambitious year of arts programming for 2019-2020. Your support ensures we’ll be able serve a diverse spectrum of artists and viewers alike. Beginning with the Portland Biennial, Disjecta aims to present exhibitions that reflect a diverse landscape of Oregon artmaking and socio-political relationships. Your donation will directly benefit our 2019 Biennial, as our curatorial team – Yaelle S. Amir (Portland, OR), Elisheba Johnson (Seattle, WA), and Ashley Stull Meyers (Portland, OR) – works diligently to shape a show based on their strong curatorial and civic work that foregrounds conversations about site, cultural evolution, and multifaceted histories.
Twice the art
Beyond the Biennial, 2019-20 will see Disjecta supporting many forms of art in our community. We will continue with our Curator in Residence program, partnered programming, and community events. As a multi-functional organization, we have decided to double the number of exhibitions every year. The former Flex/Platform space will become an additional visual arts gallery. Your support will allow us to host exhibitions in both the main gallery and the second gallery, simultaneously, focusing the increase of shows on more opportunities for regional artists.
Forward thinking
In 2019-2020 we will host the Arvie Smith solo exhibition curated by Linda Tesner, originally planned for the Hoffman Gallery at Lewis & Clark which is transitioning to a student space after 20 years of Linda’s curatorial work for the region. In spring of 2020, we will host the Hallie Ford Fellows in the Visual Arts: 2014, 2015, and 2016 exhibition with work by artists Karl Burkheimer, Ben Buswell, Tannaz Farsi, MK Guth, Anya Kivarkis, Geraldine Ondrizek, Tom Prochaska, Wendy Red Star, Jack Ryan, Blair Saxon-Hill, Storm Tharp, Lynne Woods Turner, and Samantha Wall.
Moving forward, we will continue to partner with organizations, provide a unique platform for curatorial voices for the CiR and Biennial programs, and host more of the forward-thinking and innovative exhibitions Disjecta is known for. As we grow our visual arts programming, we will include more regional large-scale solo shows of new work, mid-career retrospectives, and curated group shows will broaden Disjecta, while remaining true to the long history of supporting artists and curators.

Strengthening Sustainable Practices and Development
Disjecta has been growing in professionalism and fundraising over the last few years. Your financial support will allow us to strengthen our ongoing fundraising efforts, build capacity and sustainable practices in all aspects of the organization. Look forward to multiple fundraising events with live performances, art auctions, and experiential programming throughout the year.
Our board will be seeking new members in 2019 and continue our organization-wide efforts around diversity, inclusion, and equity in the arts. Our finance committee is working diligently to develop new sustainable giving models for both the board and members. Your support will enable outreach and training for new board members to ensure that Disjecta grows to reflect and serve our diverse community.
