FREE MUSIC AND DANCE CONCERT IN DISCOVERY PARK, AUGUST 20th 2017

Discover Music in the Park invites you to experience the harmony of music, dance and nature outdoors next to Daybreak Star Cultural Center on Sunday, August 20th.
This free concert features local classical music and dance groups, and is organized by Friends of Discover Music in the Park, a community group that is also exploring the idea of bringing arts to Fort Lawton historic district.

The Concert
Our goal is to create community that enjoys the experience of arts in parks, and to introduce the idea of using the City-owned vacant buildings to provide to the community much needed spaces for rehearsal, performances and arts education programs.

The outdoor concert will take place on August 20th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM, at the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center, and will invite the entire community to enjoy a free afternoon of music and dance in the park.

The concert will feature Lake Union Civic Orchestra, Khambatta and Kaleidoscope Dance Companies, Bella Sala String Quartet and the Seattle Phonographers Union. The artists will collaborate and perform an exciting program that will please both nature and music lovers.

Your Donations
Please consider donating what you can to help us fund this event. We need your help to get us closer to our goal! All donations to Discover Music in the Park are tax-deductible.

Your tax-deductible donations will go directly towards funding renting fees for the outdoor space, stages for musicians and for dancers, canopies, artists’ fees, and advertising and printing fees.

The August 20 Discover Music in the Park concert is funded in part by a Neighborhood Matching Fund award from Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. Our goal is to receive up to $5,000 in cash donations that together with many volunteers' hours will be matched by the City. The estimated cost for this event is over $18,000.

With your tax-deductible donation, you will not only help us fund this great event, but you will join a growing community of supporters for the idea of a Fort Lawton Center for the Arts.

The Big Picture
Fort Lawton Historic District, at the heart of Discovery Park, has eight City-owned buildings that have been vacant for more than 40 years due to an ordinance that was issued by the City to forbid the use of those buildings. Instead of serving the community and enriching the Park’s experience, those buildings are slowly crumbling.

In 2014 Maya Leites presented, at the University of Washington, her Master of Architecture thesis ‘A music campus at Fort Lawton in Discovery park’; a proposal to re-use the vacant historic buildings for performances, rehearsal and education programs.

The Discover Music in the Park leadership team, together with growing support of the local arts community and the Magnolia neighborhood, are working to promote the idea of creating a Performing Arts Center in Discovery Park. This idea combines new arts programs with Discovery Park’s existing environmental education programs; a step that would help better define Fort Lawton as a public space, promote historic preservation, and help the City maintain the neglected historic buildings.
