Zimbabwe's First Children's Museum: Discovereum

Donation protected

The Discovereum is an exhibit based, multi-sensory, multi-media children's museum promoting self-directed learning for families, students, teachers and schools. Exhibits in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics and innovation (STEAMI) are tied together with interactive activities that create a conducive environment for life-long learning. Creativity, imagination, critical thinking, and problem solving are among the top aptitudes fostered through our exhibits and activities.

The Challenge
Zimbabwe lacks a centre where children can learn through play. The country’s educational system is rigid, with an emphasis on memorization and rote learning, and there are few activities available for children centering around STEAMI concepts. Schools have limited places to take children on field trips, especially educational field trips. Our vision is to build Zimbabwe’s first children’s museum, giving children a space where they can learn and place, to help develop the next generation of leaders. To keep doing this amazing work, we need a new home and help to raise the funds to complete our vision to re-open stronger and better than before.

The conceptual design has been created by renowned architect, Nora Elisabeth Müller, who has applied child-centered design to the space. The architectural design for the Discovereum aims to engage with children by providing them with spaces that positively stimulate all their senses and create a sense of belonging.

Applying the conceptual reference of `building blocks', the use of modules and using children’s proportions as well as intentionally choosing colours are means to offer an accessible and stimulating environment.
Spatial organisation of all activities and exhibits will be orderly but also flexible to allow for diverse use of the space by different groups and even generate new, surprising experiences on repeated visits.

Especially in the outdoor space, different ground covers and materials can support an inspiring sensory adventure, whereby children are invited to touch and feel, opposed to conventional exhibition spaces.
The design will also allow for participatory elements whereby children can produce artifacts or even functional elements that remain in the space and create a feeling of ownership.

Every little bit helps, whether cash, time or resources. Please get in touch if you have any means to help bring this amazing project
