Who we are
We are FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC ) Team 4014 Top Hat Technicians comprised of students from High Tech High North County in San Marcos, California. We are building a robot to compete in FRC Destination: Deep Space in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the first human setting foot on the surface of the moon.
But, we are about more than just robots.
Sure, we learn about horsepower and torque and programming and closed loop control of systems, but we also learn about making a diverse group of people work as a team and solving real problems with limited resources. We learn about managing our finances and supporting our community. We even learn about making music videos .
And we need your help.
How we spend the money
Building a 120 lb robot from scratch is not cheap. We typically use 7 or 8 motors on our robots at $20 to $30 apiece. Solenoids to control our pneumatic components are $80. Aluminum for the frame and copper wire for the electrical system cost us about $500 for each robot. Add in sensors and gears and bolts and ... well, you understand. The costs add up really quickly.
While we service the High Tech High North County community, we receive no funding from the school, instead relying on contributions from donors like you. Since we are an all volunteer organization, every dollar we receive from donors goes to the team.
Why supporting us is important
Schools are great at teaching facts and figures, but some things cannot be learned by rote. Only by tackling new challenges do we learn problem solving skills. Only by working on a team do we learn how to interact with others in a productive and supportive manner. We need to tackle real world problems to learn these real world skills.
Building a robot for the FIRST robotics competition allows us to exercise the "muscles" that we will need when we join "the real world".
Please help prepare us to take our places in the world.
