Tom Wades story is described below, but we really encourage you to watch the 2 minute video above. It tells the remarkable story of a man who became disabled in a diving accident at age 16. Tom went through schooling, got his teachers certificate and has spent his entire career teaching kids at an inner city High School. Tom has inspired thousands of students, family, and anyone who has come in contact with him. His story would make a for a great movie.

In 1973, Tom Wade became a quadriplegic. He was just 16, when he had a diving accident which left him paralyzed from the neck down. Many people would have given up, but that’s where Tom’s amazing journey began. Tom didn’t quit and never gave up his dream to become a teacher. In fact, the accident made him stronger

After spending over a year in the hospital and rehab, Tom’s determination never wavered, in fact it made him stronger. His disability never stopped him from pursuing his goal. He went on to graduate school where he earned his degree in teaching.

For 35 years, Tom fulfilled his dream and has been teaching kids in an inner-city high school in Connecticut. Tom’s goal as a teacher has been to help his kids graduate high school and go on to college or a trade.

Tom has been an inspiration to thousands of kids at this inner-city school. Tom is able to show his students first hand by example, that with hard work, determination and a positive attitude, they can be successful in life. He is a role model and example to his kids that they too can overcome obstacles in their lives.

The kids find Tom to be warm and friendly. The words most often use for him is “he cares”. If kids are struggling and they want extra help, he is always there for them. Tom was recognized as “teacher of the year in 1998 for the city of Bridgeport” for his outstanding work as a teacher.

Outside of work, Tom has a very active social life. He is always surrounded by his loving family and friends. He’s got a great personality. He is a lot of fun and has a great sense of humor. People just love to be around tom. His life is far from over. At 61, he is the longest living quadriplegic in medical history. Tom loves to, swim, ski, go sailing, he’s even gone whitewater rafting and parasailing. Tom is game for anything. Either he’s done it or he’d be up for doing it…What can you say. He is just a remarkable guy. We’re all proud to say he’s our friend.

His friends have set up a fund to surprise Tom with $100,000 at Christmas to replace his aging specially equipped van. It’s now over 15 years old and has to be replaced. Tom has spent his whole life giving to other people and we have an opportunity to give back to him.

Please consider donating to this great cause to thank Tom for dedicating his life to helping thousands of kids pursue their hopes and dreams and show how much he is appreciated.

With your help we will reach our goal and give this gift to a truly remarkable man, teacher and mentor. Thank you very much for your thought prayers and donations.
