Hi, Dicky and Jonny here from Sporforya. We are hoping that you will please read our story, and consider helping us fund the operation of our new and unique Marathon event.
We are keen..., no, we are DEVOTED sport enthusiasts, who can often be found discussing ways in which we can help promote, and develop sport in our local communities.
In March we started hosting a chat show called ‘Talk Local Sport’ focused on community sports development. During one of our shows, the topic came up about the challenges Disabled Athletes face, when trying to get into sports activities. Examples would be; suitably adapted programs, accessible facilities and amenities, availability of special needs equipment etc...
We believe that sports activity brings an abundance of benefits to people's lives and unites communities, which means sport should be available to everyone, regardless of ability or disability.
Therefore, we decided to take action in trying to help make sports more accessible to disabled athletes. We put our heads together, and came up with the idea of organizing a Marathon Event to raise funds for such a cause.
This isn’t your usual Marathon, it's kinda different, in that it requires the participants in the Marathon to try and learn a variety of sports along the way. Allow us to explain briefly;
Name: The 12 Hours of Play Local. (think of “ The 24 Hours of LeMans”)
Objective: Participate in as many sports activities as possible in 12 hours from 8am to 8pm. Running or biking between stages (20), with each stage being hosted by a different sports provider.
When / Where: Sunday 2nd May, in the vicinity of Santa Monica CA.
Who is involved: Dicky and Jonny participating, with Monica, Maggie Leigham, and John in operational support.
Long term goal: To bring the Marathon to different cities, providing opportunities for anyone to participate, promoting local sports providers, and raising money to support access to sport.
That’s it in a nutshell, but you can get more details on our website, including the Marathon course, sports providers, funding updates, how to follow the event live, and more: https://sporforya.com/marathon
We estimate that it will cost us approximately $2,000 to set up and operate this Premiere Marathon Event. This includes logistics, technical equipment, and marketing. And a nominal payment to each of our Local Sports Providers, who are kindly devoting their time and resources by hosting one of the stages in the Marathon. Our Sporforya team are volunteers.
Parallel to this, we are working hard to promote the Marathon to achieve our target of $20,000 via donations and sponsorships. 100% of the proceeds raised will be awarded to Challenged Athletes Foundation (https://www.challengedathletes.org/)
