Direct Aid for Mata Traders Artisan Partners

Relief for Artisan Groups in India + Nepal During the Coronavirus Pandemic

The last fifteen years have seen Mata Traders partner with one, two, three, four, and now five fair trade organizations in India and Nepal. Besides producing our apparel, jewelry, and accessories, they are incredibly important community organizations, offering employment and social services to artisans and resources to their local communities. During our visits throughout each year, our team is touched by their generosity and eagerness to welcome us into their lives (we've been invited to dozens of home-cooked meals, chai breaks, and even weddings!). Our business is undoubtedly shaped by the passion these organizations have for people over profit, especially during this particularly trying time.

The lockdowns in India and Nepal have forced our trading partners to press pause on their usual production - prioritizing the health and safety of their members, they are offering work from home options as well as food assistance and continued pay for their artisan members. Their commitment to their communities continues during this crisis, as they stitch masks for health workers and provide food for migrant workers in need. They are distributing emergency food kits and Covid-protection supplies to families who are out of work. But as small businesses with production halted, they cannot continue to provide this critical support indefinitely. They have told us the upcoming months will be challenging.

So, now it’s our turn to help them.

Your donation ensures these fair trade organizations stay in business and are able to maintain their staff and artisans while supporting their communities.

For some context - one food kit costs $17.50 and includes enough wheat flour, rice, lentils, spices, and oil to feed a family of 4 for one month. One Covid-protection kit costs $3.50 and includes 2 soaps, 4 face masks, 4 pairs of medical gloves, 1 bottle of antiseptic disinfectant and a thermometer.

We hope that by opening a direct pathway to them, you'll consider how much your dollar could really do. We know requesting donations is a big ask right now, so please don’t feel pressured to donate. But, if you are able, please consider contributing – ANY amount can make a huge difference.

Donation isn't our usual route to supporting these groups and their work, but it has become crucial to their survival after a global crisis. We've been working with them long enough to know they'd be doing the same for us.
