There is an African proverb that says, "Do not let the sun set twice on an laboring woman."
As you are reading this, many African women are going through difficult, extremely painful labour without access to proper medical care. Every day, more than 800 women die from labor complications, and those who survive are often left with a debilitating childbirth injury, called obstetric fistula.
Obstetric fistula? You have maybe never heard about it, because it does not exist in countries where women have access to quality obstetric care. Sadly, this is not the case for too many African mothers.
During prolonged labor that can last days, the head of the baby pressing against the sacrum and the pubic bone causes tears in the tissues between the vagina and the bladder or the rectum. The baby dies, and the mother is left with urinary or fecal incontinence that is devastating for her physical and mental health. Without access to sanitary products, she is always wet and feeling ashamed. Because of persistent bad odor, she is often excluded from the community, she cannot work or go to school.
Every year, fistula affects more than 50,000 women in Africa. Surgical treatment is possible, but local health centres often lack resources and training to perform these complex operations.
We are the Healthy Mothers of the World Foundation, a Canadian non-profit that has offered, since 2010, free fistula repair surgeries to more than 100 women in Burkina Faso and Rwanda. Our team of volunteer doctors and nurses is returning to Rwanda in November. A dozen of women are already waiting for their surgery and hoping to return to normal life.
We need 35,000$ to make our next surgical mission possible. This amount will cover:
- Hospital stay fees and food for our patients.
- The medical material and the medications required for surgery and post-surgical follow-up.
- Plane tickets and accommodation for our volunteer surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologist and field mission coordinator.

With $20 we are able to provide transportation for a woman from her village to the hospital.
