Digit's Fight for Life

Tax deductible
On Sunday, May 28, Critter Crusaders received a call for assistance with a very severe neglect/ abuse case south of Cedar Rapids. This is a male Yorkie mix(?) who was found wandering alone and the local police department contacted Unleashed Animal Rescue to help. As the rescue proceeded to shave his badly matted hair, they saw that this little guy had some serious problems and they immediately requested assistance from Critter Crusaders. Of course, CC agreed to help, and the little guy was rushed to Eastern Iowa Veterinary Specialty Center. This tiny guy is in bad shape and we will do everything we possibly can to restore his health! He has been named Digit.

Digit remains at Eastern Iowa Veterinary Specialty Center tonight as the doctors continue to assess his condition and provide supportive care and diagnostics. This little guy was sedated and shaved down through the horrible mats that compromised his mobility. He could barely move and when he did, it was in a circular pattern. This can be from neurological injury, but we have seen this before in dogs who are so matted that the restriction of movement in their legs causes it. his mentation seems appropriate. He has an eye injury that appears to be old and the eye has shriveled in the socket. His lower jaw has recessed severely most likely due to severe dental disease. His little rump is raw and extremely sore from feces that was clogged in the matted hair. He is dehydrated and very thin. Most concerning is his low blood sugar level. When he arrived at EIVSC his sugar was 40 which is severe hypoglycemia. They started IV’s with dextrose to bring it back up. Dr. McCormick is puzzled as to the low number. In the next couple days as he is stabilized he will have an abdominal ultrasound and x-rays to help determine all that could be wrong. We will have more information on Digit as the doctors assess his condition. No doubt this was extreme neglect or abuse. Digit’s condition happened over a long period of time. His condition is so poor that the doctors and staff at EIVSC can’t determine his age. Our focus will be to bring him back to health, so he can know love and have a secure, happy life. We only focus on the positive aspects of restoring health in these horribly neglected animals with the goal of returning them to a life they so deserve and long to live!

Digit’s care will be extremely costly, and you can help by donating if you can and by sharing his story on social media. For those who prefer not to donate online, a check designated for Digit in the memo can be mailed to: Critter Crusaders, PO Box 10111, Cedar Rapids, IA 52410-0111.

Thank you!
