Jose (Dido) Candido Medical Bills

Thank you for visiting my father’s GoFundMe page. At some point in our lives, all of us have been affected by cancer—either a personal battle or helping a loved one with the disease. Besides the physical and emotional tolls, fighting cancer can be an enormous financial burden.

My father has always been a very independent man. Always looking out for his family. Providing all that he could. He is a loving father of 3, a grand father to a beautiful baby girl and a loving husband of almost 30 years.

On December 10th of 2017 my father was very…different. For the last week, his sentences weren’t making any sense. He motion was very slow, and things just didn’t…seem right. My mother knew something was wrong – so we took him to Overlook Emergency Medical in Union, NJ.

Upon arrival, he had a CT scan of his brain…which revealed a very big mass on the left side of his brain. The medical staff decided to transfer my father to Overlook Medical in Summit for further testing.

From the very beginning, my mother and I were informed that things did not look good, and that we have to remain strong and ready for any outcome. His brain surgeon was Dr. David Poulad, and he scheduled my father’s surgery right away. At some point during the recovery, he suffered a stroke, which caused paralysis to the right side of his body. He was unable to move his arm, or his leg, and his speech was simply mumbled words.
The pathology report included the following:

No cure. High grade malignant. Stage 4. Our spirits were crushed. Here we are, two weeks away from, watching the world around us smile and celebrating this joyful month, and all we could wish for was to have my dad home for the holiday. But that didn’t happen.

He was transferred to the Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute in Morristown on December 27th.

We celebrated his birthday there, the very next day.

The rehab center wasted no time. They put him on a strict schedule where he is currently receiving two physical therapy sessions, two occupational therapy sessions and one speech therapy session per day. And each day he is showing a little more improvement on his movement and speech.

My father came into this country as an immigrant. For decades, he worked 6 days a week. We now face an enormous battle not only with his cancer…but also with the financial burden that comes with the cancer treatments. Even with his current health insurance, a lot of the treatments and doctor visits will have to be out of pocket. Till this day 44 million Americans go without health insurance, and another 38 million with inadequate health coverage.

I would like to express my gratitude for taking the time to read my dad’s story, for the “shares”, for the “likes”, and for any amount of donation given. We are hoping to bring my dad home soon, until then there is a lot of prepping we must do at home so that he is given all the tools he needs to be able to continue his battle at home with us.

We will be posting updates on his recovery and we will be sharing his progression with you all every step of the way! My family and I appreciate all the support we have received in our time of need. From the EMT’s, the spectacular nurses, the attentive doctors, our family and friends, even people whom we have never met have reached out to show their love and support. For that, we are forever grateful.
