Taylor Allderdice High School is the largest urban public high school in the Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) District. Allderdice is home to a culturally and socioeconomically diverse student body. Despite years of shrinking public education budgets, Allderdice fights hard to remain one of the highest performing schools in the city and is consistently rated among the best in the state.
For most students, the Taylor Allderdice Robotics Team is their only exposure to hands-on engineering. Since 1998, the team has built a robot to compete in the annual FIRST Robotics Competition, the largest high school robotics competition in the world. Unfortunately, due to public school budget constraints, not much funding goes into the development of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) programs such as the robotics team.
This has left us scrambling for monetary support. Thankfully, we have recently been able to introduce some stability by bringing back alumni and professionals to help the team. However, building a robot is still a costly endeavor. The team strives to create a realistic learning experience accessible to all students, which involves creating a professional-grade robot ready for competition. With the money raised from this page, we hope to keep our high school robotics team afloat. We will use the funds received for registration, additional parts, new tools, and transportation; any remaining money will be saved up for the next years. The high fundraising goal is to ensure that the team remains financially stable for future teams.
We are doing everything that we can to guarantee all PPS students the opportunity to learn robotics. The team nearly disbanded last summer, but has now already grown to a group of sixteen students and four mentors! The school’s general interest in robotics has skyrocketed over this past year. This year, we hope to place competitively in the FIRST Robotics competition, while expanding the size and presence of STEM programs at Allderdice.

Vikram Bhat - Team Captain/Build Lead
This year will be my fourth year on the robotics team. Starting in my freshman year, I had little to no robotics knowledge and experience, but being on this robotics team allows one to learn through experience and adapt to changes. I plan to pursue mechanical or electrical engineering, and a large part of my interest in studying these subjects has been a result of the team, which has piqued my interests in the field of robotics and engineering.
Benjamin Barash - Team Manager
The first time I stepped foot in the Allderdice robotics room, curiosity and doubt filled. During my freshman year, I mostly only observed and learned from others. My fundamental understanding of robotics expanded with the help of my more experienced mentors and teammates. When I reached my sophomore year, I began to contribute to the competition robot heavily. My time on the robotics team has significantly increased my knowledge of engineering, and I hope to pass it on to others as an upperclassman.
