Diane Allen's Health and Wellness

Diane Allen checked into Jefferson General at the end of last August, thinking she was having an allergic reaction to some antibiotics, was transported to Swedish in Seattle, and didn’t get to go home again until early December.  She turned out to be severely anemic because of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) (caused by one of the chemo drugs that is part of standard care for breast cancer, which she had in 2000-01).  If you are interested in the details and/or the science, she has a caring bridge site: https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/dianeartemis

Thanks to advances in medicine, good care, lots of emotional support, and a lot of luck, Diane transitioned from Swedish to Jefferson General  and then to the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance for a bone marrow transplant, which will hopefully provide a cure.  While doing the workup for the bone marrow transplant, it was discovered that she still has about 1.8% of mutant cells in her marrow, so in May she is going to have another round or two of targeted chemo at the SCCA to hopefully knock that out.

Although insurance is covering most of the medical costs and part of the housing, she is looking at roughly $5k-$7k for housing expenses and another $8-$30k for 24 hour caregiving.  The actuals depend on how long her stay in the Pete Gross house in Seattle is, on how many friends can help by being 24 hour caregivers for at least a few days, and on how well she does after the transplant.  She is still working and keeping up with her web clients and WSU but very part-part time.  When she was in Swedish, she was in ICU four times and had to be intubated twice but has bounced back to where she can walk by herself again, take care of herself, chop logs, go up & down the stairs 20 times a day, and do most normal activities except she needs a lot of naps. In addition to the new bills, there are still all the existing ones to pay.   Anything you can contribute to help, will be greatly appreciated.

For caregivers, depending on what is decided (1 round or 2 of the targeted chemo), she will need help in July, August, Sept, and possibly Oct.

We love Diane and hope that you can help her during this difficult time
