Diabetic Alert Dog for Mariah

In March of 2013, shortly after her 3rd birthday, Mariah became very ill. She was taken to many doctors and to the ER several times to try to see why she was so ill. On an another doctor visit it was discovered she might be diabetic.  We rushed her to the ER where her glucose level was so dangerously high that she was transferred to Johns Hopkins. At Johns Hopkins , Mariah was diagnosed as a Type 1 Diabetic. That day changed her life and the lives of her parents forever. Observing and monitoring a diabetic is a full time job. Checking for highs and lows especially at night takes a huge toll on Mariah and her parents. Mariah’s glucose levels can go up dangerously high or life threatening low in a heartbeat.  Mariah now has a diabetic pump for her insulin and a CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) to help monitor her glucose levels. The CGM is not always accurate. The CGM has alarms for highs and lows. The problem is that Mariah’s parents are deaf and can’t hear the alarms. That is why they are constantly up at night checking on Mariah. After many hours of prayers and soul searching, it was decided that getting Mariah a Diabetic Alert Dog (DAD) would be beneficial for her and the family. A DAD would be able to notify Mariah and her parents of her highs and lows before her glucose levels become dangerous to her health.  There is no cure for diabetes.

The cost and training of a DAD is extremely expensive. Mariah’s parents are looking to help raise money for the purchase and training of a DAD for Mariah. Her DAD would be Mariah’s friend and constant companion.  More importantly, her DAD could save her life! Any donation would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your support of Mariah!
