Dez Del Barba fight against necrotizing fasciitis

Donation protected
 Background:
My son Dez Del Barba is a 21 year old Sonoma State University college student. He took a leave of absence from his last semester of college in order to pursue and complete Basic Training for the U.S. Army at Fort Benning, Georgia. After basic training Dez was going to complete his degree and attend the Officer Candidate School (OCS) for the Army. Unfortunately, while in week 6 of basic training, he developed Strep A and was not treated correctly. He was seen twice and given ibuprofen. Due to this he contracted a rare flesh eating disease, known as necrotizing fasciitis. Dez was sent to the ICU at Piedmont Hospital in Columbus Georgia on February 11, 2019. My wife and I received a call that morning from his company commander to fly out to Georgia immediately. Before we arrived to the airport another call was received and Dez was in emergency surgery. The medical team began the first of many surgeries removing infected flesh, skin and muscle from his legs and body. On February 13 Dez was flown out on a medical jet to the University of Alabama (UAB) medical burn unit. There Dez would come under the care of military surgeons from UAB and the Army. On February 14, his sisters birthday, a life saving surgery was performed and his left leg was amputated. Dez would go through another surgery the next day removing more muscle and flesh. At this point Dez’s right leg was in danger of being amputated. However the surgeons were confident that they could save his leg if he was moved to a different facility. On February 16 Dez was flown to the Brook Army Medical Center (BAMC) burn unit in Ft. Sam Houston Texas. BAMC is a state of the art Burn unit. Here Dez will undergo weekly surgeries, Skin grafts, reconstruction surgery, physical therapy and wound care will be performed. The medical team expects Dez to be in the ICU for several months. Once Dez has recovered and released from ICU, he will be transferred to a Wounded Warrior military unit on the Ft. Sam Houston base. During this time he will begin physical therapy, rehabilitation training and learning to use his prosthetic leg and other devices. Dez has a long battle ahead of him, physically, emotionally and spiritually. But Dez is a strong young man and his faith in God has shown what an amazing, inspirational warrior he is. The support of his family and friends are imperative to his recovery.

Donations will be given to charities in honor of Dez.
