On February 1st, we took Alec to see his doctor and started what was about 6 weeks of blood work. On March 9th we made the decision to take him to Doernbecher's ER and force some answers. At that point we had been told we were looking at liver failure or liver disease. This entire time they had never checked his pancreas levels.
After being admitted to Doernbecher we were able to start getting some answers. An MRI showed a very angry pancreas and obstructed biliary ducts. We spent 4 days that week in the hospital only to return 3 days later for another 4 day stay. His symptoms have improved drastically, however his pancreas is still mad.
We have been able to stay out of the hospital for a week and a half now. :-) He still has blood draws twice a week with an ultra sound every 2-4 weeks. We will potentially have more MRI's and a Biopsy in the near future. Next week the plan is to start a round of steriods.
He has to stay on a low fat diet as the head of the pancreas is what helps digest fats, we are high risk for Type 1 Diabetes as the tail of the pancreas is where insulin is made.
He has been diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis, meaning it can flare up at any time with no warning. Because of that they will monitor him closely and we will do whatever we can to try and keep him out of the hospital. We are also testing to see if we can figure out what caused this, however more than 50% never know the cause.
With all of the hospital stays, the ongoing testing and potentially more we are getting bills daily right now. I've taken a month off of most of my work and know that we will have periods of time where I could be off here and there. Money will be used to help pay medical bills and hopefully have enough to go see the specialist in Seattle so we can try to avoid some other potential things like Type 1 Diabetes.
It's not an easy thing to ask for help, but we can't do this on our own right now and us being stressed doesn't help Alec get better either. If you can help even in prayers we are beyond grateful. You are welcome to share this with others as well.
