Devin's HERO trip to Haiti

Donation protected

I am headed back to Haiti! After spending 3 weeks down in Haiti this last February, I realized just exactly how much the assistance is still needed and I want to go back. This time my trip is going to span approximately 2 months, starting 7 August 2018.

While I was down there I got to partake and assist with Kanaval 2018 where we saw multiple patients ranging from ETOH, trauma, and respiratory patients and by  working hand-in-hand with MSSP,  CAN, Crouix Rouge and DCP, we ensured a safe and successful celebration.

The majority of my calls during my time in Haiti were transporting children suffering from malnutrition from either clinics,  or hospital to hospital (photo below). HERO transports ALL pediatric patients FREE of charge to the family.

We also spent three days constructing storage at HERO headquarters as shown below. This room was stacked with supplies and no way to oranize it. I took the left over funds from my last fundraiser and used them to buy wood, screws, and drill bits to construct their storage shelves.

Supplies needed are still:
- IV administration sets
- cPAP
- Nebulizers,
- Incubator
- Baby transport pod
- Baby transport restraints for stretcher
- Lifepak 12 accessories (we have the 5 of the life packs, need more connections for them, BP, o2 sat, etc)
- ECG electrodes for life packs
- VHF and UHF radios
- Stethoscopes
- Bags of saline
- Glucose testing kits and strips
- Restrictive motion wraps for peds
- King LTs
- Small filing towers w/drawers for trucks
- Infant, pedi manual BP cuff
- Body bags
- Restraints
- Trauma sheers.

The need for medical aid is extensive and any little bit helps. HERO is currently the only pre-hospital Advance Life Support capability in the entire country. We have been given the amazing opportunity to help with the development and implementation of EMS courses for Haiti. During my off time from Haiti I have been working on creating their EMR program and it was approved by MSPP (Health Ministry) and now we are working on finalizing the educational material so that it can be translated and we start teaching courses! Our goal is create EMT-B, EMT-I, PALS, Dispatcher and an Ambulance Operator courses so that Haiti can run a self sufficient EMS system.

The funds used from this fundraiser will be used for my airfare to get to Haiti once again, and then the remaining  will be used for medical supplies that are needed, fuel and maintenance for the ambulances.

Currently HERO has 6 functional ambulances. Fuel is something that is needed in order to operate an ambulance. The longest transport I had while I was in Haiti was 6 hours round trip, which ended with a flat tire upon dropping the patient off at the hospital. Not only was the refueling after that a very hefty amount, which forced us to cut back on other expenses; we sat on the side of the road for about 2 hours while we waited for our tire to get repaired, taking one of our trucks out of service. So not only will the excess money go to fuel, but it will go to truck parts and regular maintenance of the fleet.
