Devastating Flood Damage to Library

Tax deductible
The Union County Carnegie Library (UCCL) bears the distinction of having been the first Carnegie library built in South Carolina. Funded in 1903 according to what became known as the “Carnegie formula,” the library was built in 1905 at its present location at 300 E. South St.

UCCL is beginning a renovation and restoration project in January 2018, and the final product will be a unique representation and celebration of Union’s history. Highlights of the project include: A complete restoration of the 1905 portion of the building, addition of partnership spaces, meeting rooms, study rooms, and expanded children’s and teen’s spaces in the lower level of the facility. Construction will be completed in the summer of 2018; the project contractor is Harper Corporation, and the architect is McMillan Pazdan Smith.

In preparation for the renovation, the library relocated to a temporary facility, located several blocks away at 127 E. Main St., the Graham Cash building. Library staff were thrilled to receive our Certificate of Occupancy and open our doors to the public on January 3rd, 2018, and were deeply saddened to close our doors the following day. On Thursday, January 4th, a sprinkler froze, ruptured, and caused a flood in the Graham Cash building at 127 E. Main Street, the Library’s temporary location. The initial flood occurred on a floor the Library was not leasing, and flooded the entirety of the building.

This incident will not impact the library renovation and restoration project, which is continuing as planned. However, this has lead to unexpected costs, such as relocating our collection materials, some of which sustained water damage. At this time, the library has already incurred over $15,000 in unexpected expenses related to the flood. Library staff are doing everything we can to allow Union County residents to access resources and materials as quickly as possible. We appreciate the community’s patience and support as we navigate this unfortunate and unforeseen situation.

Any donations made will go to the Friends of the Union County Carnegie Library, a 501(c)(3) organization which supports the mission of the UCCL through fundraising and volunteering. Donations are tax deductible.

Thank you for your support, and for allowing the UCCL to serve Union County for 113 years.
