Determined to be Nurse Dani

Determined, decisive, and adorable, that’s Dani. One day I get a phone call from my Danielle while she is away at MSU and she says to me, “Mom, I’m doing good in my engineering classes but everyday that I wake up, all I want to do is help mothers and deliver babies.” Dani had talked about wanting to be an Ob/Gyn since she was 12 years old.  She maintained a 4.0GPA in high school, always on various honor rolls even while participating in extracurricular activities and sports like Tennis, Track, and Cheerleading. We know that few young people get the opportunity to discover their purpose and passion in the pursuit of their education and careers.  I’ve tried to help her follow her dream but in reality did not really know how to navigate the pathway neither did I have the money and resources to ensure medical school. Although she received her undergraduate degree with a 3.6GPA, Magna Cum Laude, in Biology with a minor in chemistry and in mathematics, it was too late, we didn’t meet all of the requirements to get into medical school, so she said “you know what, that’s ok I will get there I just have to re-route”.  So she decided to become a Nurse Practitioner first, only we found that she could not get into the program with her Pre-Med Biology degree, a BSN was required, so she found a school that accepted her and enrolled in the accelerated BSN program as a pre-requisite for the Nurse Practitioner Program.

After getting accepted and relocating to Florida and beginning the program, Dani was later told that she did not have but $6,000 of federal tuition assistance left and that she could not receive any more  FA because this was not considered a professional or graduate degree. Therefore, we would have to pay the remaining $36,000 out of pocket. Dani was determined to make it through and I promised her I would help and that with hard work and God's Blessings we could do it, if we trust and keep Faith in God. Then along came the obstacles, Dani was in a serious car accident and got a severe concussion. She was taken out of school for 4 months, then my sister, her aunt suddenly passed away, next I became incapacitated with meningitis and a pseudo-tumor which I then consequently fell and got a concussion. Dani and her sister had to take care of me for 3 months.  All the while Dani continued to study and work hard, determined to excel and complete her coursework and clinicals.  These and other weighty matters have hindered my ability to put things together to earn the money needed to pay her tuition.

Being a one year accelerated program, she will be completing her course work and clinicals in September and due to graduate in early October.  She will not be able to graduate and work as a nurse, neither be accepted in the Nurse Practitioner program if we do not pay the remaining $29,000 in tuition and fees.  Dani is determined - despite all of the set backs we have faced over the

last year - to complete this program and earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree so that she can move forward in working her passion to help women and deliver babies. She has to pay the final tuition by September 28. We can’t do it alone.  I believe in her. I promised her that everything would be alright because nothing is too big for God - He blesses through His creation.

For the love of my daughter, I am reaching out on faith, letting go of selfish pride and asking that you help me help Dani to graduate and go be great!!

We must lift our young people up, for they are our future.  Give whatever you can and share this link with all of your friends, together we can ensure that Dani is able to become the great Nurse she is determined to be on her career path.
