Community Desperately Need Water for Life

This year 2019, I traveled to a village where I was born in Anyiribu sub-county in Uganda. I had not been there for quite a long time. It was a trip to see where my Dad was laid to rest. My siblings, relatives, friends, and in-laws were very happy to see me back. As usual, many of them wanted to know more about the United States and how my life is in the States. It was a big crowd of people who attentively listened to my story. We shared light moments.

However, almost at the end of the gathering, one of my sisters raised her hand up and she said she has a question. Her question was “Tobby (short for Tobias), I have seen you drinking bottled water and we are drinking water from the pot, my understanding is that you know that the water we have is dirty, may you please help us by drilling borehole around here to provide us clean water?” To be honest with you her question hit me so hard and I shaded tears.  I remained quiet for some few minutes, and answered her that I can’t afford to get a borehole drilled because it is expensive. Since that day, I have been thinking about how I can help bring clean water to this community.

This is a community where most people have not gone past elementary school due to poverty. There is no clean running water provided by the government. Some women have to foot for two to three miles in search of clean water. Most women fetch from streams during rainy season. Unfortunately, the streams dry up every year from the month of December to early April when the rain comes and the streams starts to flood.

Although the return of rains is a relieve to many, it comes with issues. Since people in this community relies on waters from the streams for drinking, cooking, washing, bathing, livestock, etc. the waters are unsafe for consumption. Water borne diseases like cholera, typhoid, scabies, diarrhea, etc. become common in the community. As a result, many people, especially children die every year.

I am hereby setting up this fundraiser to support this community. I am requesting for your sacrifice of your scare resources to join me in support of this community. The contribution made will meet the cost of tools for maintaining the borehole and training the repairers. Your contribution will have its impact in this community now and for generation to come.

Thank you in advance.
