<div><em>My name is Nihal Abed, and I am a survivor of the genocide in Gaza. I am organizing this fundraising campaign on behalf of my family, who recently arrived in Mexico after enduring unimaginable hardship, uncertainty and loss. </em>

<div><em>As we work through the legal process to regularize our immigration status and eventually be able to open a bank account here, we have designated a trusted Mexican citizen to temporarily host and manage this campaign. This arrangement ensures that all donations are handled securely and in full compliance with local legal and banking requirements. </em>

<div><em>The beneficiary of the campaign, Xochiquetzal Zúniga Núñez, is part of the "De Gaza a México" collective, a group of activists who have directly and consistently supported my family since January 2024, when they began assisting my father, Kamal Abed, in his efforts to evacuate us from Gaza. Since then, the collective has maintained a close relationship with all members of the family and continues to supports us in our process of rebuilding and adapting to life in Mexico.</em>

<div><em>The funds will be transferred directly to my bank account as soon as my immigration status allows it. We estimate this will happen within approximately 2 to 3 weeks. In the meantime, any urgent needs will be covered through partial withdrawals, which will be delivered in cash to me.</em>

<div><strong>Our Story</strong>

</div>
<div>We are the Abed family — 18 in total, including 8 children — and we are survivors of the ongoing genocide in Gaza. After our home in northern Gaza (Jabalia) was destroyed by occupation forces, we were forced to flee. What followed were four traumatic displacements, each time under the constant threat of death and without access to clean water, medicine, or even basic food.

<div>Our beloved father, Kamal Abed — a naturalized Mexican citizen — dedicated his final days to trying to save us. He appealed to Mexican authorities with everything he had, but despite his determination, he encountered many obstacles. With nowhere else to turn, he reached out to the Mexican embassy in Egypt in a final attempt to secure our evacuation. Sadly, the immense emotional and physical toll of this long struggle led to his passing from a heart attack on March 6th.

<div>From the very beginning, the collective <em>De Gaza a México</em> stood beside Kamal and supported him every step of the way. After his passing, they continued that commitment and didn't let his dream die by working closely with our brother Shadi — who had already found refuge in Mexico — to ensure our evacuation could still happen. Thanks to their tireless efforts, the support of pro bono lawyers from the Alaíde Foppa Legal Clinic at Iberoamericana University, and the unwavering solidarity of several allies, we were finally evacuated and arrived safely in Mexico on May 24th.

<div>This moment came after one year and seven months of displacement and near-death experiences. We have finally been able to reunite with our bother Shadi in México and now have the chance to begin again — in safety — while honoring the legacy of our father, who gave everything to bring us here.

<div><strong>The Road and Challenge Ahead</strong>

<div>While evacuation marks a critical victory, our family now faces the daunting task of starting over as everything has been taken away from us: our homeland, our community, and our livelihoods. We need to rebuild our lives from zero, in a new country, with nothing but the hope we carry. Every cent raised through previous campaigns was used entirely to pay for our survival and flights—every peso went literally went toward saving our lives.

<div>We are currently staying in a refugee shelter while working through the legal process to obtain permanent residency in Mexico. This will allow us to work, study, and build a dignified future — but until that happens, we urgently need your support.

<div>In the meantime, we face immense challenges meeting our most basic needs and caring for our mother, who is blind, has limited mobility and recently underwent catheterizations.
</div>

<div>According to the National Financial Health Survey (ENSAFI*), a person in Mexico needs an average of MX$545 per day to meet basic needs such as food, housing, transportation, health, and other essential expenses.

<div>For a family of 18 people, such as ours, this would amount to:

<div>MX $545 x 18 people x 31 days = MX $304,110 per month≈ USD $16,440 per month
</div>

<div>If we use the lowest regional estimate in the country, such as in Chiapas, where basic monthly expenses are approximately MX $7,000 per person, the monthly amount needed would be:

<div>Therefore, to ensure six months of basic stability—even using the lowest national standard— our family would need:

<div>The MX $800,000 will be used over the next 6 months as follows:

<div>1) Rent a dignified home where the family can live together (40%)

<div>This includes 6-month rent, as well as the cost of basic services such as electricity, gas, water, etc.

<div>2) Purchase food, drinking water, clothing, hygiene products, and other basic supplies (30%)
</div>
<div>This will ensure proper nutrition and dignified living conditions for all 18 family members.

<div>Many immigration, health, and documentation procedures require moving about within the city.

<div>Somos la familia Abed — 18 personas en total, incluyendo 8 infancias — y somos sobrevivientes del genocidio en curso en Gaza. Después de que nuestra casa en el norte de Gaza (Jabalia) fuera destruida por las fuerzas de ocupación, nos vimos obligados a huir. Lo que siguió fueron cuatro desplazamientos traumáticos, cada uno bajo la constante amenaza de muerte y sin acceso a agua potable, medicinas ni alimentos básicos.

<div>Nuestro amado padre, Kamal Abed — ciudadano naturalizado mexicano — dedicó sus últimos días a intentar salvarnos. Acudió a las autoridades mexicanas con todos los recursos a su alcance, pero a pesar de su incansable esfuerzo, encontró muchos obstáculos. Sin otra opción, se dirigió a la embajada mexicana en Egipto en un último intento por asegurar nuestra evacuación. Lamentablemente, la enorme carga emocional y física de esta larga lucha provocó su fallecimiento por un infarto el 6 de marzo.

<div>Desde el principio, el colectivo De Gaza a México acompañó a Kamal y lo apoyó en cada paso. Tras su muerte, continuaron su labor y no dejaron morir su sueño: trabajaron estrechamente con nuestro hermano Shadi — quien ya había encontrado refugio en México — para lograr que nuestra evacuación aún fuera posible. Gracias a sus esfuerzos incansables, al apoyo de abogadas y abogados voluntarios de la Clínica Jurídica Alaíde Foppa de la Universidad Iberoamericana, y a la solidaridad inquebrantable de varias personas aliadas, finalmente fuimos evacuados y llegamos sanos y salvos a México el 24 de mayo.

<div>Después de un año y siete meses de desplazamiento y experiencias cercanas a la muerte, por fin logramos reencontrarnos con nuestro hermano Shadi en México. Ahora tenemos la oportunidad de empezar de nuevo, en un lugar seguro, y honrar el legado de nuestro padre, quien dio todo por llevarnos a la vida.

<div>La evacuación fue una victoria crucial, pero ahora enfrentamos la inmensa tarea de empezar desde cero. Nos arrebataron todo: nuestra tierra, nuestra comunidad y nuestras formas de vida. Necesitamos reconstruir nuestras vidas desde la nada, en un país nuevo, sostenidos únicamente por la esperanza.
