Deputy Shirkey and Family in need

Donation protected

In the evening hours of Sunday, January 7th, 2018, Deputy Craig Shirkey, along with another deputy, responded to a report of a domestic disturbance involving an intoxicated and violent male terrorizing his family in their residence. During the apprehension of the suspect Deputy Shirkey was seriously injured and unable assist his partner in fully detaining the suspect. County deputies, officers from surrounding cities, and troopers from the Highway Patrol were all dispatched to help their fellow officers in need. Once back up had arrived and taken the suspect into custody, first responders and EMTs arrived to take care of Deputy Shirkey. When all of the Law and EMS personnel cleared the scene, the suspect was taken to jail and Deputy Shirkey was taken to the hospital.
Unfortunately, this story does not end at the hospital. Once doctors were able to access the severity of Deputy Shirkey’s injuries, they informed him that a tendon attached to his quadriceps in his left leg had been severed completely. Due to the magnitude of this injury and the lengthy recovery process it will be close to a year or longer before Deputy Shirkey can return to active duty.
Deputy Shirkey is a respected and seasoned veteran of the Stone County Sheriff’s Office and has actively sought to uphold his duty to serve those in need and protect the most vulnerable among us. Now is time for us to fulfill our duty and repay a distinguished member of our community for his service to us, a service few of us are able to do and even fewer are willing to offer. We are asking for donations to help Deputy Shirkey and his family maintain financial stability while he is recovering and is unable to provide for them. This recovery process will be long and extremely expensive and while our initial donation goal is lower than what will ultimately be needed, we will gladly accept and greatly appreciate anything that is donated. Deputy Shirkey’s medical bills and other expenses will start to accumulate very quickly so if you are able to donate, we ask that you please do and quickly. It is time for us to step forward and support the ones that have heeded the call to service, selflessly sacrificing to protect and serve our communities.
