The National Center for Educational Statistics reported that students in Oklahoma were performing much lower than students in neighboring states: Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri. According to the report only 30% of fourth grade students, and 29% of eighth grade students earned a proficient score on state tests. The Oklahoma State Department of Education reports that in Oklahoma City, 59 of the 70 public schools scored a D or F on the state report card in 2016. It is unacceptable our young people, on the whole, are not receiving quality education. It is our belief that we must invest in our children’s future together. On the day of the concert Oklahoma City Public School Foundation will be presented with our collective efforts. The goal is to provide books to young people in areas with the least amount of support.
An old African proverb states, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Deon Robertson has committed to doing his part to combat illiteracy in Oklahoma, but he cannot do it on his own. You are part of the village that can aid our young people.
