Dental Surgery for Dave

Our friend Dave Scarpello needs our help. Dave is one of the first people to go above and beyond for his friends, as many of you know, but he is often too proud to ask for help himself.

This year, he’s hit a bit of a rough patch in particular. I know we are all struggling during the pandemic, but Dave lost his home, an apartment he lived in for 21 years, and is now relegated to couch surfing.

On top of that, Dave has been on Social Security disability since 2003 after being hit by a drunk driver. While that has enabled him to pay for his expenses and cost-of-living, medical coverage is somewhat limited.

Dave has been suffering with periodontal disease for many years. After his accident, his pain specialist prescribed methadone, which unfortunately led to progressive dental disease. After hiding it for many years, it is past the point of being able to keep it quiet. While he has been embarrassed at showing his teeth to anyone (you’ll notice he never smiles visibly in photos), he’s finally telling his story now, imploring for help. This is the first time he’s ever publicly shared this. He normally wears a temporary mouth guard that fills in the missing teeth when he is in public, but that’s not a fix for the underlying disease.

In order to repair and reconstruct, Dave will need extraction of his remaining teeth and a set of full-arch fixed implant bridges. Unfortunately, his medical coverage does not cover dental, and with his fixed income and current homelessness, Dave has finally decided to expose this debilitating disease in the hopes that his friends and community can help him.

The extractions and surgery will cost $10,000 (at a discounted rate). He has consulted with a dentist here in Philly who has done this procedure many times and reconstructed his friend’s teeth as well. This surgery will enable him to have improved quality of life, reduced pain, but most of all, remove his risk for additional urgent medical issues as a result of periodontal disease progression. He would also be able to eat solid food, something he has been unable to do effectively for many years.

Every day that passes his condition detioriates, and his pain is persistent. I know this is a hard year for us all, but please, consider donating what you can do our friend Dave. He really needs our help.
