On Thursday June 15, I took my husband Denny Gottschalk to the Ojai ER after he complained of chest pains. From there he was transfered to Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, where they recommended a triple, and then a quintuple bypass heart surgery. The surgery was performed on Monday June 19. However, as of June 21, Denny is still unconscious, sedated and breathing through a ventilator. The doctors have stabilized him and are monitoring him with guarded optimism. After he comes to -- hopefully soon -- and is taken off the breathing tube, he still faces months of painful recovery, physical therapy etc..
Denny is the primary wage-earner in our household, working two jobs. I earn money from my artwork and costume and mask-making. We live frugally, do not use credit cards and just barely make it by month to month. We have no savings whatsoever.
His loss of income while convalescing, plus my loss of income while I become his caretaker, will put us in dire financial straits. This is hardship.
And I am not even mentioning the STAGGERING MEDICAL BILLS to come, some of which have already started to come in while he is still unconscious!!! While Denny has reasonably good medical insurance coverage from his work (which he may have to retire from), the co-payments and future nursing and therapy costs will ruin us. We might also have to hire some occasional household help, as my own physical condition prevents me from doing any heavy lifting.
I have enough to cover July's rent, Denny has some accrued paid sick days and vacation days to cover a few weeks, but beyond that it's the great unknown, and possible financial ruin. Even if he goes back to work in 2-3 months, which I doubt he will, there is no way we will ever catch up.
If you know Denny as a friend or have ever met him, you know what an incredibly sweet and generous person he is.
This is our time of need.
