Denny Henson, my father, is 64 years old and has recently been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.
My dad has worked at Madeira Dry Cleaners for five decades. He began working there helping my grandfather when he was a teenager and it remained in the family since the beginning. My grandfather passed in 1991, leaving the business to my dad, my Aunt Vickie and my grandmother, Lucielle. Aunt Vickie died in 2007, devasting the whole family. Not long later, in 2015, my grandmother unfortulately also passed away causing more heartbreak...leaving the business solely to in my father and mother's hands. He remained a dedicated worker, he never wanted to miss a day of work, despite all of the tragedy and loss, medical appointments, and inches of snow. His brother, my Uncle Buddy, also passed in 2010...on Christmas Day. Needless to say, my family is no stranger to tragendy.
He has a wife he has been married to since 1987, a daughter, and grand daughter who just started kindergarten.
In the early winter he began experinces symptoms of what he thought was walking pnemunia and after a chest scan it was revealed that there was a mass on his lung. After testing it's revealed that he has stage four lung cancer and it is spreading. He begins chemo in early January.
As those close to him know, he just finished recovering from vascular issues in the fall which have troubled him for years, so it has been a long uphill battle with him already.
Now my dad is having to close his store that he's worked at nearly every day for decades, and medical bills are piling up, utilities are due for the store, and him & my mom's income has been cut in half.
We remain hopeful that he can get through this.
