Calvin (Cal) Carlstrom is a 23 year retired US Marine Active and Reserve Master Sgt, Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom Veteran.  Early in his career he was a member of Headquarters and Service Company’s Security Guard Section at Marine Barracks 8th & I in Washington, D.C.  His duties consisted of not only protection of the Post itself, but the safety of the Commandant of the Marine Corps and family, as well as other General Officers. Other security duties placed him at the gate of the Washington Navy Yard monitoring incoming personnel and traffic; most importantly protecting the Chief of Naval Operations while he was in residence with his family.  Cal was selected to become part of Marine Security Guard Company at Camp David in Maryland, where he took on a myriad of Presidential, First Family and VIP Security posts.  At the end of this tour he was awarded the prestigious Presidential Service Badge. Subsequent duties over the years included: Infantry Platoon Sgt, Training Chief, Public Affairs Chief, Casualty Assistance Office, and Battalion Operations Chief. Cal retired from the Marines in 2006, he has lived most of his adult life with a weapon strapped to his side. Also, Cal is a college graduate and is a retired High School teacher.

For added retirement income Cal was hired by a firm that provides armed security in all the Lowes/AMCs in the New Jersey area. He had no trouble passing the NJ State Police background check and obtaining the local police chief’s stamp of approval on his armed security guard weapon application. All he needed then was a carry permit for the armed security position, since he already has a permit to own a gun. It was smooth sailing until the final step in the process; Union County Superior Court Judge William Daniel denied the permit, along with nine other applicants from the same company. The Judge stated there is no danger to Cal’s life and that Cal does not need to be armed while guarding the movie theater. Judge Daniel came to this conclusion despite a letter being sent by the company stating why a firearm is imperative to public safety. After appealing the judgment, the New Jersey Superior Appellate Court in Trenton concurred with the lower court. They stated there is no justifiable need for an armed security guard, despite the justification letter sent by the security company. With the recent rise in high profile shootings and major robberies at theaters, armed security is essential to protect patrons and employees who deal with large sums of cash. In fact, The Department of Homeland Security has cited movie theatres as major soft targets for terrorism.

Cal must now take his fight to the New Jersey Supreme Court – and possibly to The Supreme Court of the United States– but the legal process is quite expensive. Additionally, he will have to retake all of the New Jersey security certification classes, which is another added expense. When hired, he knew there would be steps to follow in the process to attain a carry permit. However, Cal was unaware of all the costs and required time involved at every step – only to be denied. After serving our country honorably for 23 years, he hopes to continue his service by protecting the community in a different facet. Please help this veteran fight for his Second Amendment rights along with other law-abiding citizens in the state of New Jersey.
