On 12/27/19, my 15 year old nephew was involved in a shooting which has forever altered his life and that of my sister's and niece. It's a miracle that he is alive. However, the reality is that he has suffered a traumatic brain injury and paralysis on his left side. It's been medically advised that he receives intensive inpatient rehabilitation treatment to relearn basic functions. Rehabilitation facilities that treat 15 year old children are located out of state from where my sister lives, leaving her unemployed at this time. Being a single mother of my nephew and 12 year old niece, she is in need of significant financial support as she remains at my nephew's bedside during his recovery. The family is working with hospital social work team to leverage resources available for treatment and temporary housing during his recovery. This GoFundMe campaign has been set up to supplement resources available to help "keep the lights on" at their family home while they are away so my sister and her two children can return home to Topeka, KS to a roof over their heads and utilities. Any funds raised through this fundraiser will go to paying rent, utilities, groceries, gas and miscellaneous expenses while my nephew is seeking the medical treatment that he requires.
