Demelza the Greyhound’s Surgery

Donation protected
Demelza - known to her friends as Melzie - is our four year old rescue greyhound. She was discharged from racing just over two years ago at only two years of age, and we adopted her as a pet to give her the loving home that she and all retired greyhounds deserve.

In March 2018 when playing in a field with some local dog friends, Demelza's leg caught in an old rabbit hole.  As she tripped and fell, her ankle was immediately dislocated so badly that her entire foot hung twisted and motionless at the end of her leg. Melzie was on extremely strong pain medication, together with a variety of anaesthetic and sedative drugs, for over 48 hours with her leg strapped up before she was able to be admitted into surgery for a CT scan.

They found that not only was her right hock joint very badly dislocated, the tiny talus bone which covered the joint had been pushed out of place right around to the opposite side, and she also has significant fractures to the fibula and tibia around the ankle joint. The joint had to be reassembled, and Melzie needed to have screws and orthopaedic wire fitted across the fractures to repair them.  She also needs to wear a transarticular frame on her leg for at least six weeks to allow her bones to heal properly before she can begin the long and painstaking journey to recovery.  This is an x-ray of her leg now, with the frame and wires and screws in place.

Risks include infection, arthritis, skin breakage, her body rejecting the screws and wire. There is the chance that if the first operation fails, we would need to turn to fusion surgery, or at the worst there is the possibility of amputation. We desperately hope it won't come to this, and that with proper care and rest and lots of love she will be able to make a full recovery.

Before her accident...

Today...

Melzie is a gentle angel with an incredible sense of humour.  She doesn't bark or growl, never bites, and has the most trusting wise soul. She has the happiest face! Her favourite activities include hanging out with her cat-friend Echo, rootling around in the compost heap, and exploring the forests and moors where she lives. Before her accident, she would love to walk and run for miles and miles.

If we hope to see Demelza run and play again like she could before her accident, we need to raise an additional £3000 to allow us to access the best possible veterinary care for our friend, and support her progress to a full recovery. We have already put £5500 towards her immediate treatment and urgent surgery, but this isn’t enough to cover weekly checkups on the frame, the removal of the frame (which is another operation), medication, physiotherapy and aftercare.

As part of our fundraising campaign, Hannah is also offering hand made sterling silver and 9ct gold charms, which she will hand engrave with a greyhound’s footprint as a thank you from Demelza. If you are able to donate £45, Hannah will send you a sterling silver one. If you are able to donate £150, Hannah will send you a 9ct gold one.

Melzie has a loyal fan base on her owner Hannah's instagram (@JewelleryHannah), with hundreds of people worldwide who enjoy watching her antics on Instagram stories.  Hannah receives daily messages from people who have had their day brightened after watching what Snaz has been up to - be that running in the forest, chasing seagulls on the beach, or simply lying sprawled and snoring on the sofa. We have already received messages of love and support from over 70 people, which gave us the idea to create this "Go Fund Me" page for anyone who would like to (and is able to) show their gratitude for all the smiles and laughs they have enjoyed by having a window onto Melzie's world.

Melzie is only young, and otherwise is in wonderful health.  We would be so incredibly grateful for any support you would feel able to give her, and I'm sure if she realised all that's going on to make her better, then she would be too.
