Delicias de Alicia: NUTRITION IN ARGENTINA

We are Delicias de Alicia, a social enterprise based in Buenos Aires, Argentina that for the last 6 years have been teaching children the value of nutrition and a healthy diet. We do this through running nutrition workshops for children, funded by our restaurant and catering service. Due to the pandemic, our help is even more vital. Families over Christmas are going to be more vulnerable than ever after months of no work and no government or employer help. Many people work in informal and unregulated environments and have had their work frozen. We are asking for you help in order to donate food hampers to families in deprived neighbourhoods in the city of Buenos Aires. The hampers will contain fresh, organic ingredients and recipe ideas to make nutritious Christmas meals.
HOW YOU CAN HELP NOURISH YOUNG MINDS THIS CHRISTMAS:
Pledge £10 to give one healthy, nutritious hamper to a family.
Pledge £30 to give two healthy, nutritious hampers to families plus support a family of five in receiving one of our community meals.
Pledge £50 to give three healthy, nutritious hampers to families plus support two families of five in receiving one of our community meals and receive a Delicias de Alicia canvas bag and card.
Pledge £100 to give six healthy, nutritious hampers to families plus support four families of five in receiving one of our community meals, guarantee the continuation of the project and the delivery of workshops in the future, support the longevity of our work and receive two Delicias de Alicia canvas bags and cards.
The team at Delicias de Alicia has not been able to carry out its regular workshops since lockdown came into place earlier this year, although we have recently begun helping at community kitchens and providing meals to families once a month. We began teaching children about nutrition 5 years ago through our series of 6 week workshops, and have helped 470 children in 12 neighbourhoods in Buenos Aires to understand how to fuel their bodies and reduce their chances of being affected by illness and poverty in the future. The statistics are astounding: the World Bank reports that children who are properly nourished during the first 1,000 days of their lives are 33% more likely to escape poverty as adults. According to the United Nations, hunger and malnutrition are the biggest risks to health worldwide - greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Children are going hungry, and you can make a difference.
We understand that Christmas can be a hard time financially for people even in the UK. There are plenty of charities in the UK asking for your money, and for you help to reduce poverty on home turf. Argentina may seem beyond the periphery of your frequent thoughts, but the poverty and hunger suffered by the people who live there is no less painful. Argentina has experienced upward growth in poverty in recent years, recorded as 27.5% in 2017 and 35.5% in 2019 (World Bank). It is a country that, before the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, was suffering from the effects of poverty. Children can't get free school meals, like those in economic difficulties in the UK. Throughout lockdown its population has had to cope without the luxury of furlough. The country remains in a restricted lockdown phase; there was no interlude like the summer months we enjoyed in the UK. Businesses are on their knees, and people are struggling to put food in their mouths. Children in the shanty towns where our work takes place are at serious risk of going hungry.
