It breaks my heart that I need to ask for financial help and it was an undertaking to put my pride to the side because I've always considered myself to be a very independent person. I humbly ask for your support in this time of need. I'm asking for this support over the next several months so that I can focus on becoming cancer free.
My name is Deirdre (or Dee) and I am 41 years old. This is the hardest thing I've ever had to write. On August 27th, I was diagnosed with breast cancer (invasive ductal cancer; stage 2). The tumor is quite aggressive and large in my left breast (4 cm). The treatment plan is chemotherapy, surgery, radiation and then hormone-therapy. Due to treatment I reduced my work hours and now qualify for Medicaid because I did not have insurance before and could not afford it. The reduction in work hours has made things a lot more stressful, which has caused me to fall behind on all bills. Things were already hard prior to this diagnosis and this may just be the straw that broke the camels back.
My immediate support system consists of my mother (Signe), who is 73 years old and her health is not in the best status. I never thought I would put my mom through hard times. My goal was to take care of my mother and make sure she was alright. Not the other way around. This makes it all extremely overwhelming and it's very hard to keep my spirits up, especially now, being weak from the multiple treatments. I'm not used to asking for help or handouts, but in this dire time of need anything and everything helps and goes a long way.
