In May 2020, the Community of Leupp and surrounding communities was not consider a hotspot on the Navajo reservation. Essential aid and Covid-19 assistance was not being provided from Navajo tribal government. Defend Our Community is a grassroot group that was developed by Leupp, Arizona community member Monica Harvey. During the beginning phase of Covid-19 pandemic, Monica had seen first hand the development and outcome of the panic buying due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Families and elders that live on the Navajo Reservation would need to travel hours and long-distance miles to near by boarder towns in hopes of purchasing essential supplies, food, and water. Very often items were not available or the purchase limit of 1 per item was implemented in stores. Monica and community members could not stand by and wait, something needed to be done.
One of the important goals of Defend Our Community is to deliver essential aid to homes located in rural areas following the CDC guidelines. With this process, we are able to see first hand and assess the living conditions that our elders are in. This helps to keep the elders and families safe at home. The workspace condition is harsh, with 90-100+ degree during the summer and cold temperatures during the winter. We drive miles on harsh dirt roads, through canyons, and endured hot and cold windy days.
We are asking for your help in efforts to help educate, inform, and provide essential items to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 among not only our elders but our community. Funds will be going towards purchase of essential items such as toilet paper, paper towels, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, hand soap, face masks, gloves, water, non-perishable food items and equipment needed to complete our mission.
