Deer Island Memorial for Mary Anne

Natick Nipmuc Sachem, Mary Anne Hendricks 1929-2018
Mary Anne influenced, educated, supported, and advocated for so many people, communities, and values. For more than 20 years, she was the Natick Nipmuc Sachem who saw to it that we would not forget the tragedy that occurred on Deer Island in 1675 (the internment of more than 500 Native Peoples on Deer Island), by organizing and leading the annual Deer Island Sacred Run and Paddle. Often times, Mary Anne contributed out of pocket to help pay for the expenses of this endeavor, e.g. payment for Harbor Police escort, food and location rentals.

Mary Anne's family wishes to carry on her legacy through this important tradition. With your help, we can do this! Our goal is to build a foundation of monetary support to cover annual expenses of police escorts, function rentals, transportation costs and gifts for Elders, paddlers and walkers. In lieu of flowers for her memorial, we believe Mary Anne would be so pleased to know the event will carry on in her honor. Even the smallest contribution will help.

For inquiries, please feel free to contact her daughter, Mary (Deedy) Wyman.
