Deep Breaths for Denver

Many remember around two months ago when our family requested your prayers for Laura Leigh (Salyer) Chaffin, as she fought through another hospital stay at UAB with low lung functions, among other complications caused by cystic fibrosis. We asked for our brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for guidance as Laura Leigh sought the next steps in her treatment and for a door to open to allow her to receive that treatment. Specifically, we were praying for an appointment at the National Jewish Health hospital in Denver, Colorado, the nation’s leading respiratory hospital. God’s plans became evident a week ago when Laura Leigh’s appointment in Denver was scheduled for October 8, less than three weeks away!
Now, let me change the subject and tell a story….
Five or six years ago, Andy and I were still trying to figure out married life, a toddler, college, jobs… Life was hard, but our faithful Father fulfilled His promises to provide for us. We trusted Him, and He saw us through the challenges, strengthening our faith and bringing us to where we are now. One day during that season of life, I checked our bank account online and saw a $1,000 deposit that I knew Andy had not made. I looked back at the account, logging in and out each time, certain that I was seeing things. I began filtering through family members who would have or even could have been so generous. For several days, I tried to identify the donor, but I never made any conclusions. I determined that this was solely the work of God, whose help I requested each and every day, so I told my family and friends of how God answered my prayers.
A few days after telling my parents and sisters, Laura Leigh called me and told me that she made the deposit into my bank account, and the only reason she was telling me is because I was asking everyone and going crazy trying to figure out who it could be. She explained that she was going through some money she had been saving and felt led to give to us because she knew how hard we were working. She jokingly said that she “didn’t need it,” and told me to spend it however I needed.
I really did not know what to say, other than a simple, “Thank you,” although, I truly was not surprised. After all, her generosity has always been a huge way that God has used her to bless others. She has always been willing to give her last dollar to anyone in need, whether that be a stranger, or her big sister, for she knows Who holds tomorrow, and that He will never fail her.
Now let me shift back to my original topic….
Laura Leigh and Sidney (her husband) have less than three weeks to prepare for their trip to Denver… round-trip plane tickets, hotel, food, unexpected expenses, medical bills… the financial burden weighs heavily on my 25 year-old little sister and her hard-working husband, although the anticipation for the next step in her treatment continues to grow. We are confident that God will provide, as He always does, so once again, I am asking for my brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for Denver. Pray for the doctors to determine the best options for Laura Leigh’s treatment. Pray for peace and traveling safety. Pray for a cure for cystic fibrosis. Pray for healthy lungs and easy breathing. Pray for financial provision.
Laura Leigh and Sidney are loved by so many different people in various places. Many have expressed to us the desire to help them in some way, so I am presenting this opportunity on their behalf. First, we ask for your help by praying because we know that our Father loves us and tells us to present our burdens to Him. Second, we ask for your financial help if you are led by God and are able.
