“Every person passing through this life will unknowingly leave something and take something away. Most of this “something” cannot be seen or heard or numbered or scientifically detected or counted. It’s what we leave in the minds of other people and what they leave in ours. Memory. The census doesn’t count it. Nothing counts without it.” -Robert Fulghum

Jessica Harmony Deckard (nee Henline) lost the love of her life on Tuesday, June 2, 2015. Zachary (Zak) Deckard was in a fatal motorcycle accident on IN-37 S.

Zak was a military veteran who completed 3 tours of duty, including Iraq and Korea. He was Military Police, and stationed in Washington State at the end of his service. Zak was diagnosed with PTSD and medically discharged in April of 2013. Once at home in Indiana, he spent some time as a security guard, and then began working with people with developmental disabilities. Recently, Zak had enrolled at Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington, and was set to begin classes this week. He was 28 years old.

Jessica is one of the strongest, most determined and focused people I have ever had the fortune to call a friend. She has been stronger than any of us could have imagined throughout this whole ordeal, and made some amazing and selfless decisions that saved the lives of several other people who were in need.  Because of Jessica's beauty and bravery, Zak was a full organ donor and continues to be a hero, even in death.

It breaks a lot of hearts to see her suffering in this way, and it's important that we give her the chance to grieve the loss of her beloved husband without the added torture of figuring out how she will pay for his memorial services, how she will keep up with the bills, and how she will move forward financially. Any amount will help Jessica get her feet back under her. All donations, no matter how small, are greatly appreciated by everyone who loves Zak and Jessica Deckard.
