This is her full Obituary:
Deborah Dee Kuffner (née Taylor), 75, passed peacefully surrounded by family on December 26, 2023 at home in Maricopa, AZ. Her cause of death was a glioblastoma brain cancer.

Deborah, or Deb or Debbie, as her friends called her, was born July 25, 1948 in Poughkeepsie, NY, the second daughter of Donald Taylor and Dorothea “Dot” Taylor (née DuBois). She lived her entire life in Poughkeepsie and Hyde Park until moving to Arizona this past September.

Debbie graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1966. In 1969, she earned her RN degree from St. Peter’s Hospital School of Nursing in Albany and took her first job as an Operating Room nurse at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie.

That same year, 1969, Deb met Daniel P. Kuffner, her future beloved husband of 53 years at an end-of-the-school-year teacher’s picnic hosted by Deb’s Mom (who was not-so-secretly trying to arrange a meeting!). Deb and Dan married on April 25, 1970 at Regina Coeli Church. They had four children together between 1970 and 1981,

While raising her young children, Debbie worked a number of nursing positions including with teenage girls at the Hudson River Psychiatric Center, in the psychiatric ward at St. Francis Hospital, and, from 1982 until 1986, as head evening nurse at the Baptist Home at Brookmeade in Rhinebeck. In 1982, Deb enrolled at Marist College part-time then full-time in 1986 to pursue becoming a special education teacher. She graduated in 1989 with a Bachelors in Educational Psychology, later earning her Masters in Special Education in 1995.

Deb taught for a year at Sheafe Road Elementary School in Wappingers before being hired by the Hyde Park Central School District in 1990 as a special education resource room teacher. She spent the majority of her career at Ralph R. Smith Elementary School until she retired in 2008. Deb absolutely loved teaching. She specialized in working one on one with students, taking time to understand what each child needed on their unique learning journey.

Debbie was a devoted Christian, with a deep spiritual connection. She grew up attending the Poughkeepsie Baptist Church where her father was in the choir and where she was baptized at age thirteen. As a young mother, Deb found a close knit circle of friends and mentors in Bible Studies at the Hyde Park Community Church. She later attended the Faith Assembly of God Church before becoming a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Poughkeepsie for 30 years.

Deb was known for her subtle charm, her natural beauty, introverted softness, compassionate advocacy and occasional dry wit that could catch you off guard. She was an extraordinary mother who developed unique, rich relationships with each of her children and grandchildren. She was the first person the family would ask about treatments for any ailments and thrived at caring for sick kids and preparing nourishing meals to exact dietary specifications! Her gluten free and dairy free gingerbread men and Honey Dijon Chicken will be long remembered!

Deborah also loved to dance. As a young girl, she studied ballet with Estelle and Alfonso Dance Studio. In high school, she captained the FDR cheerleading team. In later years, she and Dan enjoyed ballroom dance lessons. Deb also loved nature, the star lit sky and sitting on the back deck of their house on Roosevelt Road in Hyde Park reading, praying, and enjoying all the sounds of life. She had a special knack for epic puzzles, a passion for Children’s Books and yearly beach vacations to Maine.

Debbie is survived by her husband Dan, her 4 children– Jill (Andrew) Chuckas, Geoffrey Kuffner, Aaron Taylor (Maya Galbis) Kuffner, Jonathan (Samantha) Kuffner– her 7 grandchildren who affectionately know her as Mimi– Alex Chuckas, Nick Chuckas, Hannah Chuckas, Dominic Kuffner, Maxwell Kuffner, Sabine Galbis-Kuffner and Coco Corazón Galbis-Kuffner–as well as numerous family relations from the Van Norstrand, Kuffner, Taylor and Peelor families.

Deb was preceded in death by her parents Dot and Don in 2001 and 2003, respectively, and her sister Donna Van Norstrand in 2008.

Calling hours will be held at Sweet’s Funeral home (4365 Albany Post Rd, Hyde Park, NY) on Saturday January 13, 2024 from 4pm - 7pm followed by Funeral Services at St. John’s Lutheran Church (55 Wilbur Blvd, Poughkeepsie, NY) on Sunday January 14th at 2:30pm.
