Bob and Debby Crawford

Debby and Bob Crawford have been married for 49 years and were both on social security/disability for the last several years. They live paycheck to paycheck but do not ask for help from many.  Bob was put in a nursing home for Parkinson's and Dementia Care in April. Debby continues to reside in their home in Decatur, TX.

On Saturday she received the phone call from hospice saying the time of death was near. After 4 long days of Debby by his side, having only left to shower and come right back October 23, 2019 Bob passed away. He was a great man who loved the Lord and would give you the shirt off his back.

While at the nursing home on 10/23/19 Debby received a phone call with a voice mail being left that stated that their checking account had been deducted of $400 for a "Computer service fee" and that if she wanted a refund she had to call within 48 hours. She checked and it had been deducted.

On Thursday, 10/24/19, Debby called the number provided back. She explained that her husband had just passed away and asked for more time to get the problem resolved. They told her that she was to do it now or the $400 was gone forever. The man told her that she had to go through a multitude of steps on her computer to cancel the service and get the refund. She followed his instructions and completed the form to submit. Once the form was submitted he told her she did it wrong and accused her of trying to steal from them. He then went on to tell her that now it looked like she was owed $4000.00. In order to get her $400 back she would have to go get $3600 in gift cards from Macy's and then give him the numbers so that they would refund her $4000 the next morning. She went to Denton from Decatur in the pouring rain and bought them. He told her that he had to stay on the phone with her the entire way and when she bought them she was to tell the cashier "these are for my daughter" so she did as she was told.  When she gave him the four gift card numbers (3 at $1000 and 1 at $600) he told her that one did not go through and that she had to go get another $1000 one. She did this too. Then he told her to keep him on the phone until she returned home and could do something on her computer to confirm the refund.  She has lost a total of $5000.

This sounds crazy to us, to someone in their right mind. But to someone who had less than 6 hours sleep in the last four days, had just lost her husband of 49 years and was not in her right mind, she could not think correctly. She was just scared to lose the $400 that they originally took.

She came to my house and started explaining what had happened. I immediately told her it was a scam. We called her bank and filed a claim. We called Macy's and of course the gift cards were empty, they filed a claim as well.

These horrid, evil people took every penny my mom had and put her in over draft. The only reason she even had that much money in her possession they had just received their monthly social security check and was saving for impending funeral cost.  Now she has no money to pay for her bills right now, living expenses or money to bury my dad.

She is terribly embarrassed and hates having me do this but we are at a loss.

We are asking that in lieu of flowers for the funeral please donate to this fund.

If you have questions, please reach out to me.

Love and Blessings,
