The Accident:
On the night of August 2nd our mom Deb Gordon was crossing the street to Lou's Blues Bar & Grill in Melbourne Beach.  While crossing the street she was struck by a vehicle.  We are blessed that among the people that she was with that night, one of her friends was a retired Fire Chief who quickly performed CPR and took control of the scene of the accident.  The ambulance arrived quickly and was able to get her to the nearest trauma hospital within the "golden hour".

The ICU:
Deb has suffered injuries to her brain, right arm (humerus), right pelvis and right ankle.  During the past 11 days they have performed 3 surgeries: the first surgery was to help decrease swelling on her brain, second was an orthopedic surgery on her arm and leg and her final surgery was to stabilize her pelvis.

Over the past 11 days Deb has made small but significant improvements each day.  Because of the seriousness of her injury she was placed on a ventilator and had a tube placed in her head to help with the pressure.  On August 13th she was able to get off of the ventilator, on August 14th they removed the drain in her brain.  She is still in the ICU but is doing very well.

Next Steps:
Our goal is to get our mom as quickly as possible from the ICU into a rehabilitation facility that specializes in Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI).

To provide the best care for our mom as a family we have decided to bring Debbie out to Dallas, TX, where her son Tom and his family live and it will allow our family to have a central base to host family and friends that want to visit and help Deb during her recovery.

Donations:
Debbie has already done the hard part now by kicking the ventilator and moving towards a path of leaving the ICU.  But with any type of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), the road to recovery is going to be a long one and this is the point where we will need to lean on her friends and family more and more.

Though these last 11 days have been some of the toughest for our family to deal with, we have been overwhelmed by the response, prayers and well wishes each of us have received on behalf of our mom.  We have received so much advice, encouragement and loving support from our family members already.  And we are quickly realizing how much of an impact our mom has made in the lives of others as friends from San Diego, New York and Melbourne Beach have reached out and provided a lending hand.

There are major costs associated with just the transportation to get her from Melbourne to Dallas that is not covered at all by insurance.

TBI patients require extensive rehab and much of the services our mom will require will be considered "out-patient" which is only partially covered by even the best insurance.  Any donations her friends or family are able to provide will be used directly towards the ongoing care costs our mom will require during this long road to recovery.

Special Request:
At this time we have been asked by her ICU doctors to limit visitation outside of immediate family as she is still needing a lot of rest and recovery at the moment.

For now we would love for any of her friends or family to send notes of encouragement, funny stories/memories and even pictures for us to share with Deb while we help her on her road to recovery.  You can email us at [email redacted].

When the time is right we will post updates, with pictures, videos, etc to let everyone see how she is doing.

We are very grateful for all of the wonderful people in her life and ours who have been supportive through these past weeks and continue to pray for our mom.
