My name is Hugh Miles, though some call me Hugh Smiles. I am 23 and live between Torquay, Melbourne, and Byron Bay, Australia.I am raising money for people who suffer from mental health by shaving my head on the the last day of summer.
I am shaving my head because my hair is a large part of how people identify me. Simply, it makes me stand out from the pack.
I myself had trouble with bad and frequent anxiety attacks for a few months throughout this year. Anxiety developed into depression, caused by a negative thought cycle. This was mainly due to a head injury I suffered October 2015 which subsequently made my brain unstable. The worst part was I knew how incredible my life is and how amazing all my friends and family are but I was caged in this head space.
I have been 100% better since the start of August. While this is not a sympathy cry, my eyes have definitely been opened to the problem.
I have had many other experiences with friends going through the same problem over the years and now that I can on some level empathize, I would like to contribute where I can and spread awareness.
Shaving my head is somewhat symbolic of how even someone like myself who seems to always be happy and smiling can be struggling on the inside. I am cutting away the layers and revealing the me under the cloak so people can see who I really am. Simply, I am stripping back and opening up.
I strongly encourage and welcome anyone that is interested to join!
