Dear Dad- We love you

Donation protected
It is with a heavy heart that I’m writing this to inform you of the passing of the love of my life, Rafael Rodriguez, our sweet darling dad, on November 27th, 2017. He was a wonderful husband and a tremendous father to Amaury, Orlando, Jenny and I. We will forever have him in our hearts & he is smiling down on us every moment. They say that one angel leaves earth for another to arrive & that’s what Rafael did, leaving us just hours before our nephew, Maui, was born.

Dad was both an amazing father and human being. He was the dad that never thought about himself because everything was always about us – his children. From disco dancing to being a chauffer and knowing the in’s and out’s of every part of the city, to raising 5 beautiful children, our dad rocked out when he was healthy. Unfortunately around 2001, our dad became ill and was sick for many years and during the last few years he lost his ability to talk, walk, and function properly, but we were there everyday with him- in an effort to make him still feel our love. My mom turned Amaury’s room into dad’s own personal hospital room & every week would buy all of his medicine for his illness. We are happy to have spent an entire weekend away with the family in September celebrating with him & had a full jazz band for his 75th bday recently- all things that were costly but in my mind- making Daddy happy & seeing the smile on his face was worth all of the money in the world.

We unfortunately have a bitter sweet situation in our hands as our father has gone to a better place- a place where he can always surround us with his love and guidance and yet also be with his son and other family and friends who have passed. Even though dad was sick for many years and we knew at any moment this day would come, we in no way prepared for it because we all dream that our parents will be with us forever.

My brothers and I have met with the funeral home and have finalized the arrangements that we know dad would have loved as his “see you later” event. However, the large cost is an unexpected burden to bear and while we are all filled with pride, we all know the reality that in order to make this happen we need to lean on our family and friends. He was a caring, hard working, generous and wonderful person. He was a father, grandfather, friend and the glue that kept and will always keep us together.  We are asking for any help you are able to give in order for us to provide our dad with the memorial service he deserves. Your friendship and support are so appreciated at this very challenging time.
