Shaving my head for Maslow Project

Hey friends!
I’ve been thinking of shaving my head for quite some time now. And I thought, how cool would it be if I used this small decision of mine to create a much larger impact on those in need? I’ve been looking into some charities that do head-shaving fundraisers, but I didn’t quite like where all their donations were going. So I’ve searched for a local charity, one where I could see the direct impact from a donation, and that’s where Maslow Project comes in. I’ve heard some great stories from friends and coworkers who grew up receiving aid from Maslow Project. Read their mission statement below:
“Our mission is to offer every homeless child and youth the probability of success and the opportunity for a better life. We do this by providing resources for basic needs, removing barriers to education and employment, and fostering self-sufficiency in a collaborative and empowering environment.”
My plan is to go and shave my head and livestream it on social media whenever I meet my goal of $500. That could be days or months from now, who knows? But if I meet this goal before the end of March then we’ll just keep adding to the donation until March 31st! I know money doesn’t always come easy so even if all you have is $1, ANYTHING HELPS :)
I’ve been keeping in touch with their development director who has provided me with information on where their donations are allocated and also gave me a cool little illustration that shows this information. Maslow Project has also been approved by the City of Medford to open a warming shelter. One of my emails from the development director stated:
“We got approval from the City of Medford to open a temporary warming shelter onsite at our Medford Resource Center. The shelter will serve unaccompanied, unsheltered youth between the ages of 18-24, who are already enrolled in Maslow Project services. We will have a capacity of up to 15 individuals at a time, and it will open up on nights when the temperatures drop to the near-freezing level and will also be able to open in the summer during times when the air quality is hazardous during wildfire season.
The reason we are targeting this age group for our shelter is that there really aren't any safe, age-appropriate shelters for them in our community. Youth shelters only accept youth up to the age of 17, and the adult shelters can be frightening and even dangerous places for young adults. Our shelter will not only provide a safe place, but our other services help stabilize youth to we can hopefully prevent them from becoming chronically homeless adults. We are hoping to be able to open our doors within the next few weeks.”
Your donations can directly impact children and young adults in the Medford area in need of shelter and assistance with their education.
I’ve provided the illustration, as well as a photo of the length of my hair as of today so you can see what we’re getting into here. Once it’s shaved I plan on donating it to locks of love or any other local charity that anyone knows of that takes hair donations for those in need. My hair might not mean much to me, but I think someone else might really enjoy it!
