The following explains our need for monetary help. Back in May I thought I had a stomach virus, so I was drinking soda and eating popsicles, just trying to keep something down. On a Sunday afternoon, after about 5 days of this problem, I lost consciousness when I walked from one room to another. I was taken to the hospital where I was diagnosed as being diabetic, which I was not aware of prior to my hospital visit. My blood sugar was really high at 1486. I was in ICU for 3-4 days and transferred to a regular room where I spent 2-3 more days before being released. I had been focusing for a while on going through belongings in the house to get ready for an eventual move when it is sold, so I failed to identify potential warning signs.
Because I have not worked full time since I was laid off from my administrative job at NASA during one of their budget cuts, I do not have a steady income, and therefore no insurance. In fact it is usually pretty limited.
My husband and I have both been present to help my dad when needed to provide home care for my mother. Her deteriorated memory made it necessary that she always had someone with her so that if a crisis happened someone would be around to help her out of it. For those reasons, I am the only one with an income, albeit irregular as I said. Therefore, we do not have the ability to handle these expenses, so now as my hospital bills are stacking up, I need help to be able to pay them soon so that they do not all go to collections. One good thing is that there was a charity program in the hospital, but it only covered the costs the hospital charged me. The doctor’s bills, ambulance and any specialty groups that were separate from the hospital expenses are the balances I am responsible for.
My husband, Lannie, is also a type II diabetic with which he was diagnosed more than 10 years ago. At the beginning of this year, he ended up with an open wound on his left foot after digging a grave for a deceased pet in January. It was about 2 to 3 months later before he found an affordable place to go have it checked and it was treated and almost healed
Then Harvey hit and Lannie had to walk through flood waters from a creek when evacuating our flooding house. Since then he continued to be watched over by the wound specialist who tried several different combinations of treatments, but none were adequately reducing the infection.
He was ultimately diagnosed with cellulitis in his foot and instructed to go to the emergency room and look into getting IV antibiotics. X-rays taken when he was admitted showed that he also had a broken bone behind his little toe in that same foot that had become infected. His foot was cleaned out and the piece of broken/infected bone was removed in surgery the morning after he was admitted. After almost a week in the hospital he was transferred to a skilled nursing facility (on November 15th) where he will be for at least the next 6 weeks. So now what is currently an unknown grand total, will certainly be much greater than mine alone after he gets to come home. We greatly appreciate any help that is offered.
