Deane vs ALS

Donation protected
Deane was diagnosed with ALS on 24 December 2018. A 29 year old Combat Engineer veteran of Afghanistan, Deane has served nearly 12 years in the Canadian Armed Forces and continues to do so. It comes as a huge shock that somebody so young and healthy could be diagnosed with this illness. Deane is exceptionally young to have been diagnosed with ALS, a disease which typically presents itself in someone's late 50’s or early 60’s.

Since the diagnosis, Deane and his family have sought advice from the Chief Neurologist of the Massachusetts General Hospital, which is recognized as a centre of excellence within North America; following this guidance, Deane has decided to pursue the latest developments in medical technology to combat the disease progression. Unfortunately, due to the experimental nature of the treatment, funding through the Canadian Health Care system is unavailable. The donations from this campaign would be used to assist Deane in paying for the expensive treatments. Clinical research that justifies this pursuit may be found here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6175096/

Without this treatment the average life expectancy of those diagnosed with ALS is 2-5 years.

**For those of you who want to reach out to Deane, I would ask that you please do so through myself, Erik. You can message me directly from this campaign. I will be meeting with Deane frequently to pass along all of your messages of support! Thank you everyone for the huge rally!**
