The Shaadi is heavily inspired by the original classic film. Co-directors Shivani Badgi and Raashi Desai grew up watching Dirty Dancing and fell in love with the characters, dancing, and intricate storyline. We wanted to create something that would tie the classic movie with our Indian backgrounds, and so came Dirty Dancing: The Shaadi.
As we delve deeper into the South Asian Arts world, we see more Indian Americans connecting their American childhoods and traditional roots. Our main goal with the remake is to have people feel just as connected to Sana and Roy as they do to Baby and Johnny. We took the original story and rewrote it to represent our conflicts, our families and our communities. With a summer wedding acting as our backdrop, we were able to put all the characters in one space for an extended amount of time and dive deep into the relationship between friends and family.
