Dayan's Medical Treatment

We have created this page because earlier this year Dayan was diagnosed with a large Arteriovenous Malformation in his scalp. This is a rare condition in which an abnormal connection is formed between the veins and arteries resulting in increased blood flow and stretching of the veins. Dayan is currently in stage 2 of this condition, defined as when the increased size of the veins causes changes in the skin in the area, such as the loss of hair and thinning of the skin. The 3rd stage is called the Destructive stage as the veins explode and can cause severe bleeding and death. Due to this Dayan requires urgent surgery to cut off the blood supply to these veins and then remove them.
Dayan is 36 and originally from Panama. We met in 2016 when I was living there and soon fell in love. In 2017 we decided to make a move to Santiago, Chile to start a new life here, Dayan studying graphic design and me teaching in a British school.
Upon moving to Chile we both took out private health care. The company originally told us that as he didn’t have a full diagnosis (doctors in Panama had begun investigations into his veins but not made an official diagnosis), they would give him full cover; however, once he had an angiography in April they backed out of this and sought to prove it was a pre-existing condition. We have been through a lengthy and exhuasting court case to fight this but unfortunately we lost and will have to cover the full costs of his treatment.
Starting in February next year Dayan will need to have small balloons inserted into his scalp that will gradually stretch his skin. He will then need vein embolization to block off the affected veins and finally surgery to remove the entire area and reconstruct his scalp using the stretched skin. As you can imagine it will be extremely delicate and high-risk surgery. The estimated cost of all the treatments is £26,000, money that we simply do not have. We are doing various things here in Santiago to try and raise money such as cocktail classes, bake sales and private tuition but wanted to try Crowd Funding as another way to support the cost of Dayan’s treatment.
Any financial contribution that you could make, no matter how small, would mean the world to us.

Hemos creado esta página porque este año Dayan fue diagnosticado de una gran malformación arteriovenosa en el cuero cabelludo. Esto es una condición rara en la cual se forma una conexión anormal entre las venas y las arterias, resultando en un incremento exacerbado del flujo sanguíneo con el consecuente estiramiento y ensanchamiento de las venas. Dayan, actualmente se encuentra en la fase 2 de la condición, la cual está definida como el incremento en el tamaño de las venas. En esta fase, los cambios en la piel del área afectada se caracterizan por la perdida de cabello y el adelgazamiento de la piel. La 3ra fase se denomina fase destructiva. Se conoce así porque en esta fase las venas se rompen, causando un sangramiento severo y posible muerte. Por eso, Dayan necesita cirugía urgente, con el objetivo de tapar estas venas, extirparlas y detener el avance a la fase 3.
Dayan tiene 36 años y es originalmente de Panamá, nos conocimos en 2016 cuando yo estaba viviendo allí y pronto nos enamoramos. En 2017 decidimos mudarnos a Santiago, Chile para empezar una nueva vida, actualmente Dayan estudia diseño gráfico y yo enseño en una escuela británica.
Cuando llegamos a Chile, los dos conseguimos un seguro médico. La empresa (Isapre) originalmente nos contó que como no había un diagnostico final (dado que los médicos en Panamá habían empezado las investigaciones de las venas, pero no habían hecho un diagnóstico oficial), nos iban a dar el seguro completo. Pero luego, después de hacer una angiografía en abril, rechazaron las condiciones inicialmente acordadas y buscaron argumentar que era una pre-existencia. Hemos estado en medio de un largo y desgastante caso judicial para pelear por esta injusta decisión. Lamentablemente hemos perdido el caso y ahora tendremos que pagar todos los costos de la operación y su tratamiento.
En febrero 2018, Dayan tendrá unos globos pequeños insertados en su cuero cabelludo, que gradualmente estirarán su piel. Luego necesitará la embolización (oclusión o cierre) de las venas para finalmente concluir con una cirugía mayor que consistirá en remover totalmente el área afectada y reconstruir su cuero cabelludo, utilizando la piel estirada previamente. Como pueden imaginar, este cirugía será extremamente delicada y de alto riesgo. El costo estimado de todos los tratamientos es US $35.000, dinero que simplemente no tenemos. Hemos estado haciendo varias actividades en Santiago para tratar de recaudar fondos como clases de coctelería, ventas de pasteles y impartiendo clases privadas, pero aún estamos lejos de nuestra meta. Es por esto que queremos intentar Crowd Funding como otra alternativa con la finalidad de recoger fondos para el tratamiento que Dayan requiere.
Cualquier contribución financiera que puedas hacer, no importa cuan pequeña, significará el mundo para nosotros.
