Several years ago, I underwent successful surgery to remove bone spurs compressing the spinal cord in my neck. After plates and screws were installed and a couple months of rest and therapy, I was able to return to work with full use of my legs and arms, and without pain and any restrictions.
Two months later, Riley was born.
Within two months of her birth, I was rear-ended by a pick-up truck while sitting in my car at a stop light at 10AM on a Sunday morning. The driver of the truck ran from the scene, but was arrested two hours later. He was without insurance and without any assets. It was determined he was an undocumented immigrant and subsequently deported. As a result of the accident, I began to lose the use of my right side below the waist and parts of my right arm and hand.
Today, it has progressed to the point I am now permanently disabled on the right side from the waist down and have to use a wheelchair. Thankfully, I can operate a car, but only with specialized hand controls.
Two years after the collision, Dawn developed Breast Cancer and underwent Surgery, 20 weeks of Chemotherapy and seven weeks of Radiation Treatment. Today she is a Breast Cancer Survivor.
After my employment of 23 years was terminated after a hostile takeover of our company, I used all our remaining assets to move to Florida so we could be near Dawn's relatives. Since we have been here, I have applied for many positions, however, I have not been able to find a job in my expertise of Construction Management.
Recently, I was re-examined to determine if Stem Cell Therapy may be able to help my condition, but the conclusion is I will never be able to walk again and there are no treatments with Stem Cells for Spinal Cord injuries as severe as mine.
With everything that has happened, I have been unable to keep bills current and have been threatened with legal action, and am in imminent danger of losing our home, auto, health insurance and the basic necessities of life.
