The Dawn Initiative aims to create a space for composers from all over the world to reflect on the theme "Celebration of the Oneness of Humankind" through the lens of their personal experiences, stories and cultural backgrounds. A diverse jury panel will select up to four compositions from the submissions to be performed at the Toronto Center for the Arts during the month of November 2019 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is with great pleasure to share that we have received a grant from Ontario Arts Council for this project.
The Dawn Initiative is a concert project dedicated to the oneness of humanity. It is initiated by a team of individuals based in the Greater Toronto Area, who have been inspired by The Báb and Baha’u’llah ’s vision. In the nineteenth century, The Báb and Baha’u’llah shared a common vision for the world that was radical at their time in Persia: that the oneness of humanity, the equality of women and men, and the elimination of all forms of prejudice was not only achievable, but also inevitable.
The Dawn Initiative was the result of a group coming together organically based on common experiences and beliefs. Most of us were born and raised in post revolution Iran and experienced firsthand persecution, oppression and prejudice—whether as artists, professionals, women, men, or a member of religious minority. Today, many of our friends family members, and artists are still imprisoned in Iran for holding political or religious views that are not tolerated by the government of Iran; many concerts are cancelled just because the musicians involved are women or simply because the concert program is not approved by the government. Iran is not the only country that has prisoners of conscious and Iranian women are not the only ones who experience inequality in many aspects of their lives. These are the stories we hear over and over every day. These personal and collective stories has inspired us to explore the conflict between our experiences and the common vision that gathered our team together: the oneness of humankind in its all diversity and equality of men and women through the lens of a collaborative artistic project.
Collectively, we’ve reached a turning point to make a change and we have the capacity to move towards a brighter future. We would like to celebrate this moment through a collaborative artistic project. With this project, we want to create the space where the convergence of variables such as oppression, persecution, joy, astonishment, distinction, difference, etc. can be expressed through any musical genre to lift up the hearts and souls of the community and to recognize the essential oneness of the human family. It is through our diversity that we find our real beauty. Expressing personal and cultural experiences through music is one way we can celebrate our unity in diversity.
If you are inspired as well, please help us take this project off the ground!
If you are a composer, we would like to hear from you. If you have a friend who is a composer, please help us spread the words: http://www.dawninitiative.com/call-scores
