What a weekend!  Our underdog band of 7th graders advanced to the VEX IQ Challenge Robotics World Championships!  That's the good news.  The bad news: we have to take six kids, one robot and two coaches to Louisville, Kentucky.

Here's a recap of our season (so far):

On Saturday, March 3, 2018, Team Vexation participated at the northern California VEX IQ Challenge state championship tournament in Vallejo, CA. We previously qualified by winning a local event. Junior high students Adam, Zach, Liam, Elian, Holt, and Ryan are the members of Team Vexation and are coached by Dr. Rodger Wu and Craig Meyers. They were also assisted by Citrus Circuit student mentor Kyle and Holmes 9th grader Walsh, who help guide the team.

They won both the STEM Research and teamwork alliance awards at a Davis robotics competition hosted by Citrus Circuits last October which qualified them to participate in the state competition. The team focused their research on the ethical use of robots in responding to natural disasters. They also won the judge’s award, which recognizes special accomplishments by a team at a December event.

The robotic competitions involve multiple challenges related to programming, driving, research, teamwork, and an engineering notebook. The teams are required to use the same robot parts and participate in the same arena as each other.  You can check out more at www.robotevents.com

Saturday’s event was long but ultimately successful for Team Vexation, who faced an immediate challenge when their robot did not pass inspection at first and the team members had to modify the robot design onsite.  As both Ryan and Liam said, “It’s hard but fun working on a team together.”  Fortunately, this did not interfere with the performance and ultimately Team Vexation won the second place Teamwork Alliance award for a successful robot performance on the playing field which qualifies them to compete in a three-day World Championship in Louisville at the end of April.

The World Championship will represent the end of eight months of twice-weekly meetings for Team Vexation.  Last year, the Kentucky competition included over 300 teams from around the United States and the world. Win or lose this year, the experience will be very exciting for the young students.  As Adam said, “I still cannot believe that all the best teams are going to one place and that we are one of them.”

Please consider donating to help fund our registration ($975) and travel (approximately $800 per team member).  We also need to purchase spare parts for our robot.

If you are a local donor who donates $100 or more, the team will arrange to come to your house and wash your car!

We are also looking for corporate sponsors.  So if you know anyone at a STEM company, pass our information along.

Thanks, Team Vexation
